Question Cleared Headlights + Black Housing?

Hey guys. I'm clearing my headlights later this week like monday or tuesday.

I was wondering if anyone Blacked out their housing. How does it look? does it match the color of the car (CPB)? or should i just take out the amber piece?

Could you post pictures please

hmm. i might go with just getting the amber piece out.
i really like the "blacking out's" color. but i need that chrome in my headlight.

hey kowloon whats the difference between the V1 and the V2 switchbacks? and how well do the 6000k match with your low beams?

Ed, did you have to paint anything or did you just remove the chrome pieces? It looks like the factory plastic and it is exactly what I wanted to do to my lights. I hate the bug-eye look. I'm even trying to figure out if I can do a dual-projector style light like the 2007-08 TLs. That'd be sweet!

I love the cleared, blacked-out look. Does anyone know of a place in Southern California (I live in Orange County) that can do this?

Thanks

Thanks for the info ed_423. I'm going to drive out to The CarShop in Alhambra on Saturday to see what they can do with my headlights. I'd like to have them clear the units and install LED strips....as long as it can be done tastefully and with a "built-in" look. I'll keep you posted...JGS

I went to the Carshop in Alhambra, CA yesterday. I decided to go with the cleared, black-out look, as well as having thin LED elements installed that run along the bottom, inside edge of the headlight unit, wrapping around and ending at the base of the side marker lights.

jgs1564, got any pics of the led placement? are they done yet or still in the shop? i think we've all been looking for a good place to put led's but haven't found any tasteful ones yet.

I'd love to see that LED placement, i've yet to find a good place, without it looking too "Audio/BMW/Mercedes knockoff".

Well, I've had the LEDs in my headlights since Saturday and I can honestly tell you that I like them less and less as each day goes by. I totally regret getting them. Don't get me wrong, the place that installed them (The Carshop in Alhambra, CA) did an excellent job. Problem is that the LEDs have a bluish tint to them and don't match the asthetics of the car. They really don't look tasteful on the TSX and I don't know another way the could have been done where they would fit the looks of the car. As a result, I've decided to go back to the store and have them removed this coming Saturday. However, I do have to say that The Carshop also did a great job clearing the headlights and blacking out the interior chrome pieces. I'm certainly glad I did that.

Yah. thats the problem. I mocked up some images in Photoshop on possible placement and its just the lines on our car don't make it look good. Thanks for letting us know though!

^ LEDs lately dont look good in headlights if they are the small repeating strip lights, imo they only look good when the lights are more spaced out bigger and powerful

npathak, thanks for posting the pics for me. I'm headed back out to the shop on Sat. morning to have the LEDs removed. After they're removed, I know I'll certainly be happy with the cleared, blacked-out look.

No problem!
btw, do you have any other pictures of the leds? i just wanted to see them in a different point of view.
Are you planning to take out the strip completely, or just replace them somewhere else?

jgs -hey ask them how much it would cost to open them back up and put leds in!

defpoop - thats a good idea, if you end up doing that, please post pictures or send them to me because IMO that would look dope (led strip around the drl housing and around the projector) like angel eyes!

Well, I took my TSX back to The Carshop this morning to have the LEDs removed. My experience was quiet different from last weekend: Gabriel (the guy who helped me both times) was not very pleasant today. They wound up disconnecting the LEDs rather than removing them, like I had asked. I decided this was fine because they're barely visible inside the headlight units.

However, when I picked up my car, I noticed the the passenger DRL was quite noticebly dimmer that the driver's side. I went back in to tell Gabriel and his response was that there was not anything they could do about it. He blamed it on the stock bulbs. I told him that this had not been an issue before I brought the car in to them and I politely asked him to come out and look at the car so he could see for himself what I was talking about. He repeated that they couldn't do anything about this and walked away without saying another word to me.

While I'm happy with the cleared, blacked-out headlights, I extremely disappointed with the way I was treated. After all is said and done, I will NOT go back there again, nor will I recommend them to anybody! They don't seem to care about customer service, which I'm sure is going to cost them repeat/referred business. It's too bad.

Thanks for the sentiments ed_423. While this turned out to be a fairly costly mistake on my part, at least the cleared, blacked-out headlights look good.

Wow, sounds like a sh*t company when it comes to customer service. When will these installers/fabricators learn that car dudes talk and word-of-mouth travels fast.

The cleared headlights looks good though.

before fully trashing the company, i'd give him a call or stop by again on a diff day. if two other times for you, and for other people he's always been good, maybe he was just having a bad day. maybe ya gotta give him a break. just a suggestion

rule of thumb is customers is always right but in this situation its kinda different. the process of opening and closing the headlamps multiple times would probably degrade the housing and cause it to become more brittle cause of the expanding and contraction. maybe thats why the shop did not want to repeat the process.
