Best Cargo Mat for Dog?

Okay... now that we have the '14 TSX Sport Wagon, we got a great accessory: A 1-year-old collie dog. Unfortunately, he is clearly not an experienced car rider, and the drooling is out of control when he's in the trunk.

What's the best solution for this? Been cleaning out the trunk with wipes and it is tough going; that drool has lots of stuff that dries white and looks gross. Once I get another shampoo for the trunk, how can I protect it in the future? Any great liners or other solutions you've tried? How expensive is this? What's a good solution without spending... you know, what I've already spent on this gorgeous dog, namely, a small fortune?

I'd do the liner (wait... I did the liner...). It has a fold out flap to protect paws from getting stuck in the latch mechanism and is easy to clean. It protects the back of the seats and the sides too.

My dogs hate all rubber mats. Now I use a couple of old blankets. Sometimes they will even take a nap. Only problem is they stink after awhile so I take them out and air them out or even wash them.

A quick Google search turned up the factory cargo liner (p/n 08P42-TL7-200) could be had for 150 or fewer bones. What's wrong with that?

What do you mean by "the liner?" Made by whom?

Nothing wrong with that.

That's the direction I'd go if I still had trunk dogs.

Thanks, guys. That discussion on the Cargo Mat vs. Liner was especially helpful... Just grabbed a liner and though it looks like it will be a pain in the @(#*#( to get on and off, it will certainly be effective.

Guess I'll wait until it arrives, have the cargo area shampooed, and then install it -- probably never to be removed until we sell the car. Should have KNOWN I'd need this...

Why would you need to remove it? All of the panels are accessible and the tie downs/safety hooks are uncovered. I don't see any reason to ever take it off. You aren't losing any functionality with it on.

You know... to clean it. If the dog continues to be anxious in the car, and there is as much drooling as I'm seeing now, this sucker will need to be WASHED.

I don't think it will be that difficult to install and remove. The instructions seem a bit overly detailed but I doubt it takes as long as it seems.

Post some pics and your thoughts when you get it!

Will do. I'm sure it will never look as good as the day I get it... so I better take the pics right away.

It takes 3 minutes to remove it. It literally just velcroes into place. Super easy to remove if necessary.

And you wouldn't wash it outside of wiping it down I would think. Its vinyl, and its waterproof, so just wiping it down should be fine.

Hmmm... You clearly have not seen our dog drool. Leaves behind little calcium (or something) deposits when it dries. Yuck. Also, dog hair. Also, dog smell. But perhaps I should take your hopeful comment to heart. I will make no judgments without experiencing the liner for myself!

I have two dogs that slobber... everywhere. And shed... also everywhere. It's a PITA. But, this thing seems to wipe down easy.

I bought the liner before we got the pooch. It takes no time to install and not time to take out.

Now that we got the German Shepherd, the fold down flap comes in especially handy - to protect the bumper but more importantly to protect the paws from that nasty latch mechanism. We'll need to find some sort of a thin dog bed to keep the monster from sliding around. She likes to stand up and look around but her paws get no grip on the vinyl.

Our dog is the same (in terms of the need to look around)... Will the dog expenses never stop? The thin dog bed seems like a nice idea. You're a great owner.

No.

Sometimes you can get "non dog" items that work as well for a lower price. Maybe some sort of crib mat will work?

Okay, folks, thanks so much for your suggestions on this one. Got the Acura "trunk liner" yesterday. Once I figured out which way was "up" on it, the installation was simple, simple, simple.

I will say that whomever at Honda was hired to write the text on the installation instructions should be given a gentle demotion, though, for describing velcro tabs as "hook and loop fasteners." I was dreading installing all of those. But they're VELCRO.

The liner covers just about every stitch of fabric in the trunk, which will really help my drool clean-up. The rest is about getting the dog comfortable with the trunk, which will take... time. But the liner is a great buy, worth the $130+ it costs. Thanks for the advice!

Velcro is a brand of hook and loop fasteners. Their lawyers will write you nasty letters if you say you use Velcro and it's not actually the brand Velcro. Writing technical manuals is a thankless job.
