Will 235's work w/18x7.5 wheel

Getting ready to pull the trigger and buy new wheels. They will be 18x7.5 with a 45 offset....will 235/40WR18 work on that size rim and fit a 2001 TL with no rubbing? No drop on the car. My alterative is a 225/45WR18, but I want to put on Pirelli PZero Nero M&S on there and they don't make a 45 series tire in the M&S. I called Tire Rack and they said yes, but they also said a 42 offset would fit and everybody here said to stay away ....and I am. Thanks for all the helpful comments in advance, you've all been a great help in this process

Fluid Grease,

I am surprised no one lambasted you for telling you to use the "search" engine yet  , but I hate people who have nothing better to say rather than help someone.I'll see if I can help you on this and whether others concur or not...

Yes, 235/40/18 will fit on a 7.5" rim but beware a 235 wide tire calls for a minimum of 8" wide rim as our tire expert , Lawaia, would tell you. Whether it's safe, it probably is according to many others in the Acura forum who have done this before and put a oversized tire on an undersized rim. Lawaia is going with the manufacturer's recommended minimum requirements, certainly justifiable, according to manufacturers' specifications to have no law-suits, safety problems, etc. Be aware some shops will no even mount it on the wheel.
Take a look at these guys with 235/40/18

225/45/18 fits no problems on those rims.

You can fit 225/40/18, which Pzero Nero M&S comes in that size, on that 7.5" wide rim no problems.Beware that your speedometer reading will be off, meaning that it will be 2.34% faster if you compared the overall diameter of a stock TL 205/60/16 vs. 225/40/18. It will mean that you are rolling 2.34% faster than stock; if you went 100 miles on a normal diameter rim vs the aftermarket rim/tire combo (225/40/18), that means you will travel 102.34 miles instead according to the odometer reading. Other than that, that tire/wheel combo (225/40/18) should be no problem as many people here have done that before.
Tire calculator

Yes, stay away from the +42 rim offset to be safe.

Beware that if you do ever drop the car, you should be okay with the size 225/40/18 tire on that rim size but if you go 235/40/18 , which fits also, you may have some rubbing unless you trim the bumper tab off. Bumper tab is the plastic flap of the bumper that bends in the wheel well.

Good luck you should be on your way with 225/40/18 on a 7.5" rim no problems, especially on an unlowered car. Beware that the "wheel well gap" will look funny or there will be a pretty big space there unless you do lower the car.

Hey Mike....I didn't put in my anti flaming warning on this one ...I did on my "Please Weigh In" post....I have done 100 or more searches and it seems I can't come up with a definitive answer to some of my questions that come up. Although, I missed that thread you sent me! I know about the SUV look (that's for you NSXNEXT) I'll get with the 40's, plus I don't want my speedo off that much which made me ask about the 235's which would be really close, just too wide for a 7 1/2 wheel...I have been using the tire sizing calculator herehttp://www.eunos.com/tirecalc/ to keep my selections close to spec. I have been tryin' to do my homework. As for the 42 offset, some TLers have done it and say no rubbing with a drop!...go figure What I am doing is putting on a 225/45WS18 but it won't be a Pirelli PZero M&S....I'm going to try the house brand tire that Tire Rack sells under the name of Avon Tech M550 A/S, that one comes in the correct size, plus if I want to do a modest drop, I still can and they're cheap, if they suck, I'll replace them. Living in a snow area and the way I travel for work, Maryland to Maine, I don't want to get caught with a "Summer Only" tire in an unexpected snow storm....but you know all about SNOW! I was just fishin' to see what some other TLers were doing in regards to the 235. Thanks for the kind words, it's what this stuff is all about , just helping each other out in a common cause

Fluid Grease,

I am probably like you also. I sometimes do all the searching on this forum but I like to ask for more anecdotal opinions to try to make the right decisions; for people who like to think, decision making is always hard. But it never hurts to seek more answers to a definitive answer to problem/questions ...hehe

I am glad I could help and I see that you are on the way to making choices that seem right for you. I am not familiar with the Avon Tech M550 A/S tires but they seem like they are rated good on the tirerack gauge. One caveat I always tell people, and it applies to myself, is to try not to skimp on tires and put lousy, cheap tires because they are simply not worth it ( unless serious budget constrains) - people just don't realize they are playing a dangerous game when it comes to buying cheap tires and paying for it later.

I hear what you're saying about tire quality. I've been a Michelin guy for years....I always figured, the more you spend, the better the tire....this go round I'm trying a different approach....listen to others! It's not that I'm skimping, but when I went by size and then saw the ratings of that Avon tire, I figured what the heck! It seems like a good tire regardless of the price if you go by the reviews Someone has to be first so they can report back to the other TLers whether good or bad....we need to know! But now it seems, that's the least of my worries....I finally found a wheel I like (thanks to "The RelentlessOne", the Photo Chop Champion!) and now I come to find out it's 6-8 weeks out for delivery Now the new question...do I wait or do I start this whole process over again?...like you said about the thinking thing, could take me awhile, so long that the first set could have come in!!!!!....But, in the scheme of things, if this were all my problems, I'd have no problems! Thanks again.....g

sik-yet-slick-TL,

I don't think it's unsafe but it's not recommended though. First off, the 05 TL has a default rim width of 8" with it's stock 235/45/17 tire. You should be aware that "officially", tire manufacturers recommend and probably for good reason advise that a 8" rim width is needed for a 235 tire size to be mounted on the wheel. Secondly, your 05 TL will probably suffer a slight performance drop due to having less metal rim width to stabilize your car as well detract from the handling and cornering ability - although not much though. The offset is equally important to have a proper one for your 05 TL for it to fit properly aesthetically and performance wise. Some members have mounted a 235 width tire on a 7.5" width wheel on a 2nd generation TL, but you take your chances though. I do NOT recommend it for your 05 TL; get the same width or larger, like a 8.5", to be safe.

Why are you posting about an 05 TL here? Check Tirerack for fitments of tires / rims. More importantly ... post in 3rd gen TL ...
