Exclamation Why do stock TL-S rims cost so much?

I was curious to see if anyone had an inside scoop on why TL Type - S rims cost so freakin much?! I cracked one of my rims from hitting a rock and during my search to find a replacement, I found that they cost around $200-250 online, sometimes that much for remanufactured! They look nice for stock, and fit the car well IMO, but for 17x6.5 pizza cutters? If anyone can let me know why they cost so much i.e. super lightweight wheels, Enkei no longer manufactures them etc., I'd appreciate it. I just need to justify buying a replacement rim for that much or just pay an extra $300-500 for a set cheap VSR or ADR rims. Although I've heard stories about those cheap ebay rims being junk.

What kind of a "boulder" did you run over? We don't exactly have low-profile tires that would allow the rim to crack easily.

As for their prices, that's about right.

They cost that much because that's what the market price is.

OEM wheels are very reliable. They are hard to bend or crack and the car was built to ride on those wheels. So in other words, they are basically the best and most optimal wheels for the car. That's why OEM wheels, especially performance-oriented Type-S, still cost quite a bit.

Buy cheap wheels to replace them, and you will end up bending them or cracking them and replacing them again, so on and so forth.. I love my Enkeis, but I've bent them. I never had that problem with the OEM wheels.

Thanks for the offer but I think I'm going to just buy another stock TL-S rim since the other three tires are practically new. After factoring in the price of the tires as well, I think it will be better to keep the stocks for now.

Thanks for the replies!

It was a pretty big rock about 4"x3". To top it off, I was on my way home after loosing $400 up in Central City (slots) when it happened. It's in the mountains and small rocks fall quite frequently on that stretch of road. It cracked the rim right in the middle of it. It truely wasn't my day that day.

That's an awesome price if they are for new ones. Wish I would have known about this site before I purchased. I just bought 2 from Partstrain.com for $138 each, but they are refurbs. They look new though, no scrathes or curb marks with 1yr warranty. Partstrain actually raised the price of these refurbs after I placed my order though. Now they are $275!

Thanks for the inside info, I'm sure other members will appreciate the heads up.

you might be able to get the rims cheaper from a honda dealer (rather than acura). These rims are now standard on the accord 6-speed.

Hey guys,

My dealer was willing to sell me the brand new Type-S wheels at $133 each. He said this was basically their cost, and it is a special price because I am a "regular customer". He says prices are coming down monthly as 2nd gen gets older. Check your dealers !!!

Oops, sorry, I meant $163. Didnt mean to get everyone too excited.

I had already bought my wheels through Ebay, so I couldnt take him up on his offer.

Too bad they don't have 2G OEM rims in 18x7.5...

Anyone have the sizes for the 3G TL OEM and A-Spec rims?

And replace the "H" centre cap with an "A" one from a wrecked TL-S or if you can get the cap separately.

They DEFINITELY still make those rims because of their use on the Accord 6speeds now (both coupe and sedan).

Have you ever looked on ebay? I just recently bought a 2001 TL and all 4 wheels had bad curb rash. I came across an auction for 4 wheels that were boxed when the car was bought new and I won the auction for $218 plus $85 shipping. (check out ebay item # 8067461974). I think they went so cheap because the seller was new to ebay and had zero feedback. It was a steal for sure and look great !! Try eBay!

Check out this item on Ebay (item # 110003690555). If you were to buy 4 wheels, even at the "Buy it now" price, it would come out to $165 per wheel (incl. shipping). You'll just need your existing Acura center caps to replace the Honda caps.

Hey Maxxboy, you got a good price on yours, but yours are the EOM 16" wheels, not the 17" Type-S wheels.
