Tires for 2003 OEM rims...

Hey, I know I've seen this mentioned somewhere here before but can't find it in the archives.
I've got an 2003 TL with OEM tires and rims - 205/60/16. I think a 6.5" rim.
I want a wider tire on the OEM rim and hear the 225/55/16 is about the largest that will fit.
My question is will this be a good fit or will the rim cause the tire to "mushroom" and wear quicker in the center???
Sorry for the repeat, I've seen this somewhere on here but can't find it.
Any advice or info is appreciated.

Thanks....

Size ... 205/60/16 is OEM size. However, 225/55/16 will fit and is close to OEM spec (within 0.24%).

Choice of tire:

205/60/16

Bridgestone Potenza G009
Sumitomo HTR+
Fuzion HRi
Yokohama H4S
Yokohama V4S -- probably better of the two

225/55/16
Bridgestone Potenza RE960AS
Avon Tech M550 A/S
Continental ContiExtremeContact
Kumho ECSTA ASX
Michelin Pilot Sport A/S
Pirelli PZero Nero M&S
Bridgestone Potenza G 009
Fuzion HRi
Michelin Pilot Exalto A/S
Yokohama AVID V4S
Bridgestone Turanza LS-V

This is a list I generated from Tire Rack. Choose of these based upon your driving habits, budget, and climate (I assume NC rarely sees snow/ice so I assumed you wanted all-season tires for 'just in case'.

The 'mushroom' is caused by overinflation (I think that is what you are referring to). Do not follow the sticker on the door because that is only for the OEM tire (Michelin whatever). You should contact the tire manufacturer to see what the optimal pressure is for the particular application. However, a general rule of thumb is 80% of what the maximum pressure states on the tire's sidewall.

Hope this list gets you on your way. Tell us what you decide. (The feedback from the tirerack.com site provides a wealth of information).

Re...

Thanks for the info but what I meant was the 225/55/16 tire is meant for at least a 7" wheel. My OEM's being 6.5", I'm wondering if it will "squeeze" the tire and cause the tread to "mushroom" out. At least that's what Discount tire is saying.
Wondered if anyone here had that problem.
All season Michelin Exalto's are what I've been lookin at.

Ok, cool. Thanks for the info. Did it change fuel mileage or speedo/odo reading or driveability in any way??

Thanks again...
