Stock 16s to Aftermarket 18s, Car feels heavy, sluggish, not fun to drive!!

Hey just got my aftermarket wheels and falken 912 tires. Car looks freak'n amazing. However, its now feels so heavy. I don't know how to explain it but it doesn't feel as light and nimble as my stocks. I have a '99TL with 135k km. car runs pretty good it I'm not liking the driverbility with my new wheels. Acceleration from stop is now where as quick, its seems that the torque curve is gone.

I don't know what's going on but has anyone has else has or felt this issue or is their something wrong with my set up.

Wheels: Falken ZE912 225/40/18s
Rims. Incubus Boost Black 18 x 7.5 (40 offset)

Also how much of a weight different is the new tires and wheels compared to the stock and could this be the issue that the new set is significantly heavier than stock.

Bigger wheels = takes more to get them going. that will make you use a little power anyways. take notice to guys that race there cars. they buy smalle lightweight wheels. Unless you bought some lightweight wheels that are more than likely be heavier.

time for some performance mods to get that power back

i read somewhere that rotational mass, that is your wheels, is equal to like 3x the mass of an object in your car. something like that.

but yeah it's logical that heavier wheels would need more torque to spin em

They look like heavy rims:

Weird, I put on my 18" wheels with 225/40/18 tires and my car doesnt feel any slower, if anything, faster. I also put my stock wheels on tires and 18" wheels on tire on the scale and my 18" wheels were about 3 pounds lighter than stock.

Yeah thats your problem. Stock wheels are about ~25-26 pounds.

But its rotational mass (unsprung weight) it makes more of a difference than weight sitting in the car. You also need to take into consideration of the larger tire. It weighs more as well.

OP. Look into lighter weight wheels.

The Incubus Boost rim looks heavy. No wonder your car feels sluggish. Moreover, wider tires (from 205 to 225) have more traction, and will also slow the car down. But the car can carry more speed into corners. If you want better performance, spend the money on light weight rims, not heavy-ass rims.

A couple weeks ago, I replaced my 24 lbs Pilot Sport tires with the 27 lbs RE-01R tires, and I can immediately feel that the throttle response has become slower. I can even feel the difference with 3 lbs extra weight (and no increase in tire width) per corner, let alone your heavy-ass rims and extra tire width.

thats a reason you see so many wheels with thin spokes- not a giant center mass
My 18" Enkeis weigh 23 lbs each~ and the tires are between 21 and 23 each apprx

Good point. Id get lighter wheels if some company made the OEM Type-S rims

I've been driving now for about a week and the car doesn't feel so sluggish anymore. I think I got use to it. I remeber when I first got the rims they didn't look or feel that heavy. But this can be very deceiving. But when you add those 18" tires it added it real quick.

At leat my shimmy and pulling to the left are completely gone. But yet with bigger tires and tims and my system in the trunk, my mpg has gone down some what. Just gotta go easy on the RPMs.

^ There you have it ... you probably got used to the difference in pick up and now that's your 'baseline'. But having a system in the back + heavy rims + heavy tires ... your car will feel sluggish once you remove all that extra weight.

Or ... you could modify the heck of thne engine to compensate ... LOL.

the remarkable adaptation of the human brain!

You just did the opposited of light weight pullies, x2 (drive wheels) and increased your parasitic drag. It does the same to your braking (all four wheels) and your suspension (all four) will be slower to respond to the road.

If you like the looks, fine. If you like performance, either fork a lot of $ just to get back to baseline, or sell them and buy rims that are lightweight that you can also appreciate the looks and then go from there.

^^^^^ With heavy rims, car performance is being traded off purely for the look. Even though the heavy rims looks good, but now even stock-rimed TL's will outrun this "good-looking" TL.
