If you are driving a 2nd gen (2002-2003) TL Type-S, then the OEM size is 215 / 50 / 17 tires. OEM rim width is 6.5".
If you are not going to use 215/50/17 tire size, then 235/45/17 would be OK. However, there is debate whether 235 tires can fit a 6.5" rim. For instance, 235/45/17 Avon Tech M5 A/S tires should be mounted on 7.5-9" rims. That's 1" wider than the OEM Type-S rim. Some tire installers won't install it ... some others, will.
I'd advise you to try something that's engineered to fit the rim ... free tires or not ... safety is something I do not take lightly.
