Question Experience/Results with tire one size bigger than recommended for rim

Okay, I tried searching on this, but there are so many variables on how this can be posted I gave up after awhile.

Anyway, I'm wanting to run a 235/45/17s that has a recommended approved for rims 7.5"-8.5", and I have 17x7 rims. So, anyone who's run a slightly bigger tire on that's not approved for said rim?

Doesn't sound like much, but if the tire - at the bead - is pulled inward too much, it could result in a tire that doesn't have a proper contact patch . . less traction, uneven wear etc. So, has anyone done this and what was the outcome?

. . . and no, I can't afford new bigger rims right now . . or anytime soon.

since no one else has commented yet... this is not really what you were looking for but... I've run 235/50/15s on 15x7s on the front of my 70 El Camino without any problem for years... (just be sure it balances good and you get a good alignment after installation)

As long as the tire height close to the stock height (to keep your speedo as close as possible to stock), you shouldn't have any problem with moving up to that diameter on a 7" wide wheel... are you lowered at all? (even if you are I would think you should be fine clearance-wise but others may have more information)

Hope this helps.

Hope others with more direct experience ring in...

Thanks for the response. I agree that I would be okay with the extra height. It's the width of the tire where it sits on the rim. Almost every tire dealer is saying that putting the 235/45s on a 7" rim would pull the tire out of shape a bit. Specifically pulling the outsides of the tread to be pulled in to toward the rim resulting in less tread on the ground. Anyway, I'll probably go with 225s and save up for some bigger rims down the road.
