Eh, tire pressure?

So, I went to check my tire pressure and found out I friggen lost my tire pressure gauge, so I went to the store and bought 3 just to be sure (all different models).

I looked in the driver's door opening and the spec says 32 psi all around. I went to one tire and checked, it said 42psi. Wtf? It definitely didn't look over inflated, I almost thought it was a little low. I thought maybe the gauge was busted so try the next one, 42psi. And the third, 42psi. Crap!! I checked the other tires, 42psi all around.

So, wtf? Are my tires way over inflated? What pressure do you guys run for the 17" wheels?

it sometimes looks like that, but you are definitly over inflated. release some of the pressure and get it back down. 32-36 psi should be good.

also, just because it looks under inflated, doesnt mean that the pressure's low. i have 18's on mine and the damn tires always look like their flat. except theyre actually at 36 psi all around right now.

i know it's 32 psi for 17" wheels, but is it the same for 18x7.5 with 225/40/18?

^^I would think so but I am not 100% on that. Since psi(pounds per square inch) is relative to the size of the tire, you would have to put less air in tire with a bigger wheel size to reach 32psi.

No ... the recommended tire pressure on the door is for the OEM tires (215/50/17 93XL load rating). There's a rule of thumb (not exact science but a general rule) with tire pressures if you don't use this exact tire. Inflate your tire to at least 80% of the max pressure printed on the side wall of the tire you have on your car. Of course, contact the tire manufacturer to see what is recommended by them for the particular application.

^^ Agreed
there is no real right air pressure. I prefer mine high. I typically run 38-42 depending on my driving im going to be doing. The sticker on the door is "Recomended" thats all. you can go higher. Read the side of the tire to find out the max to make sure you never go over it.

Would using the recommended PSI on the sticker for the stock wheels be best for fuel economy?

Is your pressure gauge the stick style? Get a digital one, I found that the analog pressure gauges can be off by 5-10 psi.

Raising it some will help. I ran my stockers at 36-38 typically

The manufacturer will refer you to the placard found on the inside of the drivers door for correct pressures. Before I took delivery of my '05 TL 6MT, I had the junk Bridgestones taken off, and Michelin Pilot A/S put in their place. Michelin told me to refer to the placard. It is the WEIGHT of your car that has the strongest influence on pressures. Since I got the 6MT, it has the A spec underpinnings, so pressures are set to 35psig front, and 32psig rear, per the mfr.(Acura). This is my third Acura, for a total of over 300,000 miles, and the Michelin's always give me great performance and mileage (around 70,000 per set), so the pressures must be right on.

Just to answer some questions, I took the measurements cold, and I did use analog gauges and all three read exactly 42psi.
