Clunking noise when turning wheel (2003 TL)
I have a 2003 TL.
When I am pulling out of a parking space or my driveway, I hear a loud "clunking" noise when turning the wheel past a specific point. The turn doesn't have to lock-to-lock either and this noise does not happen at speed.
The car is still under warranty. The dealer wants to replace the steering rack.
- Has anyone else experienced this?
- Should I let the dealer replace the rack?
The repairs will be free but I don't want them "trying out" repairs just because they can't diagnose the problem accurately.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Sounds like a CV joint problem.

Thanks Edward. Today I also noticed the noise when the car is completely stationary and I simply turn the wheel past a critical point (car running - power steering pump on).

If the car is stationary and you still hear the same noise, then it's not the CV joint problem.

Tischer Acura of Laurel, MD replaced the power steering rack, gave it a four-wheel alignment, and the noise is gone. The car also feels "smoother" in terms of steering than before. I post this just to close this thread and to wonder how this could have happened on a car that is only a year old. Oh well - it was under warranty and they always give you an Acura loaner.
