Can't decide on tire size for Type S wheels

I've decided to get some Type S wheels for my TL-P but can't decide on tire size. Should I stick w/ the 215/50/17? I got a quote of 660 from america's tire co. for some Yokohama YK520's.

But should I look into 215/45/17 or 225/45/17? Any advice? Thanks!

most of the people will agree that the yokohama avid v4's are the best all-around, with a good price too...check out tirerack.com i think they are like 110 a piece around give or take...

as for size...its up to you...you can stick with the stock size 215/50/17...you could get a 225/50/17 also for a bit wider tire...i personally wouldn't go for a 45 profile as that would be a lower profile with the 45 compared to the 50...not by much really though....but with the roads / potholes around here, i'd rather have more meat / profile on my tires so i stick with 50 on my type s wheels...riding on 225/40/18's with my spring/summer wheels is definitely a lot less meat than with my type s wheels, and theres an obvious difference when it comes to bad roads...

hope the advice helps

thanks for the info man. yeah i noticed the avid v4's. i wonder what the difference is between those and the yk520's. I also wonder if america's tire co would install tires i buy from tire rack. I think i'll stick to the 215/50/17 setup cuz anything else is gonna throw my speedo off.

from my experience the 225s are about 25% cheaper than the 215s..this is because the stock tire size..atleast this is what a few places told me...

I've understood from other posters that 225s are actually a better size for our car...and will not have any significant impact on the speedo... True or false?

as long as you keep the overall dia as close to the factory as possible. Search Tirerack.com. They have great prices, large selection and reviews and specs of tires

I agree...it just needs to be close enough... If millimeters mattered, the speedo would be off between a new tire and one that is on it's last legs...

If you keep the OEM rims, look at 215/50/17 or 205/50/17 ... probably the easiest to find tires of this size. And try to find a load rating of around 93 -- our cars are heavy!

I'm not sure how many people would really say Yoks are the best all-season tire on a budget.

I have an 02 TL-S with stock rims. I've had Avon Tech M550A/S and just ordered some Kumho ASX both 225/45/17.

If you go to tirerack and compare specs/reviews, you will notice both these tires are well-reviewed. Avon are $100 and Kumho $82. Pirelli PZero Nero M&S are awesome as well but they run $125+. Continentals are also on sale for $95. Another plus for the Kumho is they weigh in at 22lbs. The Avon are downright chunky at 27lbs.

This site is for Miata but physics doesn't change based on car model. You can compare actual specs on tirerack to find out exactly how different tires (and sizes) compare.

I'd highly recommend going with the 225/50's. They are a little wider and give you a little less gap between the fender and tires. They are actually the "proper" size as far as the speedometer being correct. Acura did not re-calculate the speedometer when they added the Type-S in '02 and the 215/50's that came stock have a different rolling diameter than the stock 16's. And, as mentioned before, the 225/50's are actually a little cheaper! Good luck with whatever you decide.

wow, thanks for all the info guys! i wish i would have read some of this before i got my tires this weekend. now i'm wondering whether i should have gone with 225's or gone w/ some other brand. Anyway, I got my tires and wheels put on this weekend at America's Tire Co. I got the Yokohama YK520's, 215/50/17. They were $124/tire. I decided to stick w/ the stock size cuz of the speedo thing. I chose this tire because its pretty much gotten very good reviews and one of the few in this particular size that comes w/ a 60,000 mile warranty.

I did look at tirerack (i think) and it shows that the TL-P 205/60/16 and TL-S 215/50/17 tires both have 809 revolutions per mile. The 225/50/17's are i think 807 revolutions per mile.

So I finished up the car this weekend. Got the OEM kit, trunk lip spoiler and type S wheels on the car. I'm LOVIN the way it looks. Only thing is I wish i woulda dropped it but I'm not for a couple of reasons. I'll post some pics over the weekend.

I do have one complaint though. The type S wheels are HEAVY! It almost seems like the engine struggles a lil with the extra weight. My mileage also looks like its gonna decrease a lot. People w/ TL-S wheels on a TL-P agree?

First off I am running 235-45-17 Contact Sports and I love them. Wider base/road contact, less tire wall.... the above is something you sacrifice in order to have your A-Ride look that much hotter!!!

I must mention that I am NOT experiencing the struggling part you spoke of..even with the beats in the trunk and me driving!!! (Heavy Hitter in the Building!!)

I got the Yoke YK520's and I love them! Very quiet and handle great. I don't race my car, so they are plenty good for me. Plus, they got a high treadwear and warranty. I got 215/50/17 for mine. Make sure you get the 93V load rating
