best value tire?

I have a 2000 TL with only 40,000 miles and it will need tires pretty soon. I'm looking for a tire that won't break the bank, but will be a relatively smooth ride and have good tread life - high performance is not an issue for me. Gas costs too much for me to fool around too much - but speaking of gas - would a particular tire affect my mileage?

I realize this somewhat of a mundane question for serious enthusiasts - but I appreciate anything you can offer.

treadwear rating tells you how long a tire last- and how sticky it is to the road
you will be looking for 440 treadwear as a longer life model, than a 200 super sticky performance tire, or 320 performance tire
those 80,000 mile tires are like rocks

Though the General Exclaim UHP is a great summer and mild winter tire- and under 100 bucks- treadwear 320- love mine so far!
I always figure 20k miles on a set of FWD car tires is pretty good- you got 40k on the stock tires because they are freeway tires, not handling tires

tirerack has some good comparison info on brands, and many local tire stores will often price match them, plus give free rotation and flat repairs etc.

A wider tire will affect your gas mileage.
