Hey Ginnhj, welcome !
About your safety concerns......if indeed you have a "bad" axle, I would'nt want to risk a trip of that distance. But, first of all....you should have it professionally checked as you seem to be unsure of the condition.
What is it doing that makes you think it is going bad ? Have you looked over the cv boots on the affected axle ? If torn or leaking, the joints may be worn. This would cause the car's steering to possibly be erratic when turning the wheels. Jerking and clicking noises are also a sign of a bad axle.

Possible AXLE problems at Speed = Crash....
If you think you have a Going-out Axle dont test it.. If you lose it at Highway speed the car can suddenly pull at the opposite direction which could cause an Accident... Have your car Towed!
