Question Adjustable shocks, KYB, Tokico or Koni on OEM Springs

Not looking to lower the car. Just want better control.

Have anyone tried performance shocks on OEM springs?

Lowering springs are shorter and stiffer.

OEM springs are longer and softer. But they are not longer and stiffer.

Does performance shocks make it stiffer? What everyone will say is "Yes."

What about the adjustments on the shocks. I can firm it up. If I'm on OEM springs, in theory, I can make it even more soft (not that I want it), correct?

But the car suppose to ride on the springs. So if the springs are "soft" OEM, then how does it suppose to improve handling? The shocks control the springs, but the springs are still "soft." I'm not understanding this part.

Is it a waste of money, if one have no plans for lowering springs?

Meaning, yeah...it's better, but not worth the $$$$.

Thank you.

I think you need to ask yourself what you want out of springs/shocks.

at full soft, I believe the koni's feel like stock. this is all from reading, as i dont have any personal experience.
in a month or two, i'll install my koni shocks paired with aspec springs.

if you have no plans of lowering, why not just go with STOCK everything.
stock springs, stock shocks.

if you havent, test drive a type-s then go back to your base....you'll feel the difference in shocks and stiffness.

and also, springs have a "spring rate"
spring rates are important because they also help determine the stiffness factor.

OEM TL springs are engineered exactly for our TL. if you have ever driven in anything other than a TL (toyota/lexus) you'll feel the difference as their shock/springs are catered more towards luxury/boaty feel.

Correct. So it's the spring that determine the "softness," not the shocks.

So using performance shocks will not make it stiffer?.

What do I want? Less nosedive during braking. Less rear squat on the gas. Less lean in the corner. If it sounds like I'm looking for a track car, I am not.

Just don't want that OEM "loosness."

Have I driven an A-Spec or Type S? No, so maybe that is what I want want.

Lastly, will performance shocks (on OEM springs) end up lifting the car with a 4X4 look (because they are stronger)?

They both determine the the ride quality.

I am on H&R sports with Koni yellows with near 2" drop and it rides just like stock.

To get what you want you really need better springs AND shocks and to take the time to adjust them to what YOU want out of the ride. Only way to really get rid of the nose dive is to lower it some with a better spring and shock and get bigger sways.

I may have an answer in a week or two. I've got 4 tokico illuminas I'm going to put on a 00 tl that I got for my daughter. I had them on my 03 tls with eibach springs and hated the setup. Her shocks are shot, but I'm going to use the original springs.

I recommend my setup
about a 1.5 inch drop so it is nice and level but not so low that you hit stuff or have issues on driveways. got rid of the nose dive when braking and cornering is a lot better.
