But to answer your question, go with 215/40/17's. If you want, you could go 205/40/17's, but that's a bit thin.

I've been running 225/45/17 for 8yrs and are really close to the factory 215/50/17s. They're great for all around performance, but not meaty enough for heavily modded cars.

Right now I'm running the just released Sumitomo HTR A/S P01s. They've been on about 2 months and I'm really liking them. They're fairly cheap and light weight as well, a major plus if improved performance is important.

I like Fuzion tires. I have Fuzion HRi's. I know they also make those for 17" wheels. Nexen also makes great tires.

The middle number is the sidewall size.

Okay newbs, take it easy.

I posted a link so you can compare all the specs. That same TireRack link has all the information you need to know about reading tire sizes.

Since you've not been real clear on what is important and what isn't. There isn't going to be a perfect tire, there are always trade-offs. So what is important to you? Ride quality? Tire life? Dry Traction? Wet? All Season? Handling? Braking? Acceleration? Tell me that and I can be more specific. And again, there is no tire that will get an 'A' across all these factors.

One more link . . .

http://www.discounttire.com/dtcs/infoSidewall.dos

and now that you know what the numbers mean, as I stated above you still need to understand what you want in a tire, and then you can use that to start selecting tires that best fit your needs. If you really want to get serial like I did, put a spreadsheet together with all your needs and rank them . . . like I said, I went over the top.

Thats not how you buy tires. You buy tires that have the same overall diameter as stock so that your ABS/VSA/Speedo arent off. You cant just start picking numbers that you want.

The stock size for the 17 is 215/50/17

I agree. WHy would you go with a smaller sidewall than that? Not only will it throw everything off, but it will look retarded.

that's a very good point many folks over look . . if you really want to drop down one profile level, the best is the 45, the size closest in diameter will be a 235/45/17, but that tire is too wide for 17x7 wheels, so the next best choice is 225/45/17, they're usually close enough and I've been running them for 8yrs+ . . speedo is about 1mph off, so not a big deal, but you'll need to double check the specs on each 225/45/17 as they do vary from tire to tire.

and as 02type-s noted, a lower profile . . even the 45 will look weird as the gap between the tire and fenderwell looks larger . . even though it really isn't, well maybe 1/16" or so.

So if all this causes you stress, stick with 215/50/17 as fsttyms1 and 02type-s noted. Then you just need to search TireRack and or some other tire dealer to find the tire with the specs that best meet your requirements.
