What to Look for in an OBDII Code Reader?

I'm looking for some advice on how to select an OBDII code reader. I would use this for my 1999 Acura TL. I've read some of the old code reader threads but, with electronic devices, things may change over time.

I'd like to find something for $150 or less. I've seen basic $40 units on eBay and at Harbor Freight and fancier models seem to run closer to $150.

Are there any particular features to look for?

Are there big quality differences between units?

And, for those that have code readers, what did you buy and would you buy it again?

www.actron.com makes good ones that you can buy at most auto parts stores (Pep Boys, AutoZone).

I have this one.

I have the 9135. The only difference between the 2 is that the 9135 will also have the code description displayed along w/ the code.

Thank you. That's helpful.

I'm also wondering if it's worth the extra expense to buy a unit with the ability to handle the upcoming "CAN" update to these systems.

I guess it won't make a difference with my 1999 TL but it could be used on a newer car.
