transmission problem

hi guys,

we bought a used acura tl 2000, and it was having transmission problems ( sometimes it shifted hard to first gear) and had over 230K miles(Carfax after we bought it) (the odometer was turn back to 76k got ripped off). but we got used engine with 70k miles on it from 2001 tl and had the transmission rebuilt. but the transmission never worked( did not shift gear after 3rd gear) so i took it back to the auto shop , now they cant figure out what the problem is. they said it was an electrical problem.

can this possible be that we put an engine of 2001 tl in 2000, can that be causing problems in transmission not sure what to do now. any help would be appreciated

No, it's the shops fault. The engine bolts up to the same transmission, and doesn't affect shifting to third gear. The ECU on both cars are also the same.

Definitely sounds like the shops fault. It should come with a warranty, and you definitely should get it fixed for free.

take it to a trans shop for diagnostics, give them the backstory so they have a better plan --bad wire to ecu or selenoid etc

rats have been known to chew thru an important wire or two as well!!
if a car sat a long time, got a different dash (how else would you change digital miles?)
then a shop did an engine swap and a trans rebuild,,the chances of some small thing being off is pretty high on a car with shady history

Bring it back to the shop that rebuilt it and have them fix it, you should have some warranty with the rebuilt right ? Or take it to a good trans shop like 4tl said, have them confirm if the problem is inside the tranny and you go from there.

Update:
Thanks for your suggestions i got the car back from the mechanic everything works fine but now it is making whining noises when in drive. Could the whining noise be because of the the rebuilt transmission?

Maybe PS pump whine? That's the only constant whine I've ever heard from our cars. Open your hood and listen for it.

Is it coming from the pulley thing to the left of the engine?

Was it whining before ? Did they tell you what they found wrong with the tranny ?

the noise only shows up when the car is driving, but when the car is parked and i press on the gas the whining noise is not there. The car did not make the whining sound before we got the transmission rebuilt. So i was thinks its still the transmission

When you're driving, try to hear if the noise is louder during acceleration or deceleration ?

might require more warranty work~ was this a first TL for them?

ck as piggy said--that will help determine problem

you verified the correct fluid level with 15 minute freeway drive from cold?
ask them what they used for fluid,,dex3 is bad news

Well if the noise wasn't there before they did the transmission, i would bring it back to them again and have them drive the car with you and pin point the noise so they can hear it and have them find out where is the noise coming from. Try to find the problem and get it fix before the warranty is out. Check with them what did they found wrong with the tranny ? Could be gear noise inside the transmission or something.

the wheel bearing in front hub, or the cv axle bearings?

i think it is the axle bearing that is connected to the wheels , not sure what the front hub is.
