Transmission problem?

Hi, I am pretty car-illiterate, but hopefully some experts can help before I go in for dealer service. I have a 2000 3.2 TL with 148,000 miles on it. The transmission was replaced under warranty at about 105,000 miles when it kept slipping out of drive and into low gear at high speeds.

Now it seems like the same thing is starting to occur, but gradually... a couple times lately when stopped going uphill, when I hit the gas to go, the car had slipped into what felt like neutral. I had to go into reverse and back into drive for it to "catch" again. Then the other day when backing out of my garage, it felt shaky when I went from reverse into drive.

What are we looking at here, any thoughts? I'm a 37 year old man but have the car literacy of a grandmother unfortunately...

Thanks,
Brian

I think you are about to buy another transmission. Same thing happened to me. I'm the original owner. I replaced the original transmission at 60,000 km, and now at 168,000 km it won't stay in gear.
Mine is a 2002 TL Type-S, and I've tarped it up for the near- to medium-future. I don't know when or IF I want to even bother fixing it. Over the phone, the dealership gave me a ballpark price of $8000 to fix it. It would have been covered under a court-ordered warranty extension if it had occurred before March 2009, but since failed in November 2009, I am apparently out of luck.
I've been advised to avoid the steep dealer priced service work, and head over to a transmission shop to get a quote.

Well I suppose if I do need a new transmission, then it's not worth investing in a decade-old car with 150k miles. I guess I'll find out next week.

Meanwhile I would strongly recommend that you talk to your dealer service to get a break on the transmission. My transmission failed at something like 105,000 miles, which was 5,000 miles past the extended warranty at 100,000 that Acura had provided since they knew the transmission was flawed. Despite being past the warranty a little, my dealer got Acura to honor the warranty anyway, since I was the original owner and it was close to the cutoff. Didn't cost me a dime to replace it. Since you're in the same boat, it's certainly worth a try! And only the dealer can pressure Acura like that. Good luck.

Hi, I have a 2003 TL type s, my extended waranty expired in November, 2009 (I had 100,00 miles and 7 years extended waranty), my car has only 63,000 miles and gues what the transmission failed yesterday, I understand that Acura has extended the waranty on the 2003 tls due to transmission issues, does any one knows if they will replace my transmission even though the waranty has expired. Yhank you
