considering acura is covering a $3500-4000 repair for you at no charge, you buying a 200 much needed part isnt much

Oh I am so happy but remember I am jobless and I just got the timing belt job done with a few extra things added so my pocket is hurting bad I need to know how much so I can pull cash out my bank before I go in there to pick up my baby. I got all the belts done, water pump, the pulley and tensioner for the timing belt all done for 960 and some change. That was on the 14th so I'm broke for real. I love my car but I think she might be spending some time parked for a bit until I get some work

Speak in person with the service MANAGER to make sure they do the corrected price, also tell him your situation. Might be able to work on the parts price or something for you if they did the timing belt work.
Negotiate before the car is done or worked on

The invoice is printed before you get there,
You will have to agree to a price before they can do the work- not `about 400`,,a real price for part and labor not including sales tax must be given and approved or you dont have to pay it!

Ask if they have an apprentice position or need a lot porter, its a starter job at the dealer but its a job with potential

Thanks! I've been MIA for awhile but yes, 25k miles later and still going. Hopefully I'll manage to reach far past the 200k mark (currently at 135k).

Quick clarification -

If it says "open" under the trans warranty extension, does that mean I will still be covered if it goes out?

I was reading the description and it says 7 yrs or 100K from date of original sale, and with 138.5K, I'm a little past that. :-)

I'm a little confused.

its been extended to 7 year+9 months/109,and some VINS get the court case odometer error 5%- so good to 114.5 indicated miles

The computer at acura has no idea of your current mileage.
Big Brother has not invaded that far... gen2 at least~

In your case it means you would have been eligible had the need arose

well it turns out I had one bad mount and two bad lower ball joints so that was all completed and it only cost me 400.00 so I am fairly happy, I did workout a deal with the manager he was able to get the price of the parts down after I showed him the website where I could get oem parts from cheaper it would have been over 600 dollars if I had kept my mouth shut. I'm going to get my baby later today. To bad we got 3-4 fresh inches of snow I wanted to drive a car that shifts right that I own.......lol. i got plugs waiting to go in as soon as I can get a free hour away from my two year old daughter. My buddy says too much seafoam in the gas tank and I'll mess up my converter any truth to that??

too much anything is not good

Seafoam at 1, 16 oz can to 8 gallons ~1/2 tank in the TL is the recommended 2oz per gal from Seafoam for cleaning doesage- no worries at all

1 can for the intake manifold vac method- with some thru the TB plate too

In the oil 5-10 mintes before change, or if you want, throw on a new oil filter- add 1/2-1 can foam to oil and drive 100-150 miles,, then change oil and filter
Make sure the engine oil is warm when you go to change it when its been foamed

DO NOT use any type seafoam in the trans on your TL

1200 is a steal the dealer here told me it would cost over 3800 if I didn't have under 109K

Always speak with the service manager- not the service writer
tell them how you were really freaked out when it went nuts on the freeway and almost crashed into from behind!!!
The manager has already called corp warranty rep and got their decision on cost sharing- thats who deals with corp- manager

Yes you greatly appreciate their efforts working with acura corp in getting it to 1200, can they go 500 for labor to remove and replace plus 300 for a 3/36 warranty for you?
or include the 3/36 warranty in the 1200

anything is better than nothing in your situation
Service Writers are making commission on retail sales amounts, they dont make any on the warranty stuff (to my old knowledge- could be new insider things)

Tell the Service Manager that you have read many stories on acurazine.com about 500 being the average amount - can they possibly do that for you?

if they can get you to pay 1200 instead of 500, why not! that extra can go a few pockets, I mean places

my tranny went out the other day.... its a 2000 with 111k miles ... what is the best way to get it fixed and around how much? Could ACURA Replace it for less than 3,000?

bucsteve- you arent going to get the regional manager and you dont need to- that is the service MANAGERS job to do on your behalf. You hopefully told that person your story and they called corp
Acura corp and dealers want happy customers- you tell the Service Manager what would make you happy,,, happy enough to give them perfect 10s on the customer survey, and to do the same with the online or phone surveys done by corp after your visit.
Bonus checks ride on the comment cards
You start the bidding at 500 + 300 for 3/36 warranty that you read about here.
they are at 12- if they say no to less, you better take the 1200 that moment before it gets revoked!
You have to feel out the situation:
Have you been a loyal repeat acura owner, customer at the dealer, time and miles over limit, to see if you think they should go to your request.

read back thru the last 3-4 pages of this thread and all your answers and tactics are there
Good Luck- keep us posted
First it needs to go to the acura dealer for diagnosis- they will say its 100 dollars at writeup, - but if they warranty it partial or full the diagnosis is included
If you have them do the work at a higher rate the diagnosis is included

never thought i was going to change or need a new transmission but my 02 TL-S (51k miles) tranny is about to fail, rpm shot up to 4 and it will not come down unless i release the gas pedal and does this sudden tilt forward action around 3rd gear, dangerous, very dangerous.

there are too many post here on fail trannies, can someone please give me some advice what to expect at the dealership. thank you all.

99 tl-p, 98k.

i went into superior acura in merriam, ks today thinking i needed some new motor mounts, because when downshifting (at any temp, esp 3 -> 2) and shifting into reverse (when cold) it would practically slam into the gear, also when coming to a stop, it shifts into 1 and the car lurches a little, every single stop, every single temp. all of these behaviors have been present since i got the car in aug 08 with 93k. they are saying that the motor mounts are gone AND that the tranny is slipping. i don't deny the slippage, but it didn't seem to be all that severe. (no warning lights, no flashing D4...)

quoted 3300 + tax for new tranny, new front and side mounts, installation, and the 3/36 warranty. whined a little, they were nice and called corp which is offering 50:50 split on the tranny, so 1500 for that + the 300....will try whining to corp on my own and see what happens....cannot afford a new tranny atm.

but...i asked about just doing the mounts (quoted 500) and "the tech says that one bad shift from the tranny and you'll just tear up the mounts." how true is this? i'm in the process of going thru all 50 pages of this thread but figured i'd move on this as quickly as possible...service manager said that if i wait too long acura may say "you burned it up even more, the goodwill offer is no longer valid." i did get it in writing though.

dammit...

dealer has been nice...even offered me a free loaner for the day "because safety comes first, so you can take the loaner today while you think about it..." i politely declined but i'm impressed with how they seem to be trying really hard to make this work...greg patterson spent at least 45 min going back and forth between me and acura...so hopefully something will work out...

a 99 is well past the time limit of 7 years plus 9 months, so anything acura does is very generous, past 24 hours dont expect them to keep the offer ( or whatever it says on your paper estimate with the offer)
50/50 is great for your 99, you better find someone to loan you whatever is needed to cover it--
and the broken front motor mount is much cheaper to replace while the trans is removed, 20 minutes vs 2 hours! the part stil lcost $120 or so

Do you have clear title, meaning not SALVAGE or rebuilt title car?

then you have a 7year PLUS 9 month from date of first sold, or 109k miles-whichever comes first... full coverage trans warranty

Call for an appoinment, tell them it wont shift and revs to 4000- they will send a tow truck if you need, just tell them you dont feel safe driving it now
(acura pays for the tow in warranty trans cases)
(Stop revving it like that!, ease thru the gears on the way to the dealer if its close by

The service writer makes an estimate invoice of $100 to inspect trans shift problem, sign that and dont worry about it.
(Check your seltbelts for retract operation, if they dont retract right,,, those are extended warranty too and take a few days to get- good time to get both freebies~

A Trans Problem trained Tech takes the car around the block doing a few specific test at slower speeds and jumping on the gas to try and make it slip, then they plug in the code reader and see what it says.
Make a diagnosis of failed trans, clutch packs dead or the noted codes- acura wants to know why they are shelling out 4grand worth of free

Service Writer changes the work order to a Warranty invoice and the trans is ordered from the warehouse. Shipped by truck, weighs 450 pounds

You leave in a loaner (ca. I think requires age 25 due to insurance rules about rental cars) 3-7 days later you get your baby back with a smooth shift like it hasnt had in a long time

get it immedialty to the dealer!!

dont bother with the first 40 pages of the thread, the recent stuff is where the current policy and member experiences will be found

The thread started in 2004 iirc, when the first ones were having a problem, then it went to court and the extended warranty we got

thanks for the informative detail feed back, my tl-s is not a salvage or a rebuilt, purchased brand new back in sept. 01, everything is in it's original shape, also appointment is made for this friday, as for now i am extremely careful on my 2nd and 3rd gear.

no problem with my seatbelt it retracts fine, however i do have a shaky rear-view mirror that i constantly have to adjust plus my radio still unusable as of today (i do have the original code) and tried the pull out antenna thing and that does not work either, will try the underground parking next as some other member here have described.

my appointment is this coming friday and i will post the up and downs later, at this point i suspect 80% that i need a tranny replacement, i've called acura client service to check my vin number and she said my 02 tl-s is still under the 7yrs 9 month warranty.

i don't get the after 2005 it's not failing anymore part.?

From wikipedia "Transmissions replaced prior to March 2005 usually fail again. Transmissions replaced 3/2005 and later include a redesigned 3rd gear clutch pack reported to fix the problem.'' I'm just not sure if its true, or some other bull s!!t from wikipedia
And i also got an appointment on friday, will see what gonna happen.

Just joined today. Great website. I have a 2003 tl typ S that i bought certified used from Acura dealer in 2005 7 year-100,000 warranty. The original transmission was fixed in 2004 according to the acura owners website. In 2007 transmission went out and they replaced it, no problems. In 2008 same issues and they said they put in the oil jet kit. Now hear i am tonight on the way home and all of the sudden the car is slowing down, but the rpm's are going up. Thought i had shifted into neutral, but no. Shifted in neutral then coasted luckily into a gas station off the highway. I checked the transmission fluid and there was some in there but smelled really burnt. Sat for about 30 minutes tried again. Started to move a little then started slipping then nothing. Is it the transmission? It is an automatic. I know have 117,000 miles on the car. This time there was no jerking or slow delay like with the problems before, just all of the sudden nothing

facts: Warranty period is 7 years PLUS 9 months or 109k miles whichever happens first.
Some VINs also get a 5% odometer error credit raising the limit to 114.5k miles for them.

If you pay partial cost towards a trans - thats when out of warranty and you get partial GOODWILL from acura, then you can buy a 3/36
Otherwise the units covered fully under warranty get 12/10
Its stupid but what can you do

in 2005 there was a change to the oil passages in the trans case, and the external oiler for 2nd gear went from an external add-on `recall` part, to an installed inside the case part
While it has improved them greatly it did not solve the problem 100%
They are better but why do you think they sell a warranty for them~

plummer

in 2004 there was a RECALL to install the 2nd gear oiler kit, external onto the trans
Was not a trans FIX of any kind!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Then it sounds like you had a real trans failure in 2007 and they replaced the entire unit.
A 2007 replacement would have come with the new case design and internal oil ket
So somewhere something is wrong with the whole story about them doing the 2nd gear oiler in 08

Go in person and speak with the SERVICE MANAGER about the ongoing problem and that it has been in for a prob with this trans recently
They can get it taken care of for you
MANAGER is the key word here

burnt fluid would be a sure sign of a problem,, overheated trans fluid and internal parts

Talking

i can't believe this but...
earlier this morning i got a couple of calls from the acura dealership...couldn't answer because i was in class "this is so and so, the service manager at superior acura, about your failing transmission"

expecting the worst i called back later that afternoon...
manager: "have you contacted acura about this issue?"
me: not yet
THEN THIS:
"because your car had relatively low mileage (98k) even though it is well out of the extended warranty, the district manager has agreed that we can goodwill the ENTIRE cost of the transmission replacement."

they suggested i still replace the motor mounts (300). no problem!
i asked about the 3/36 warranty..."need to contribute 100." no problem!
so for total cost of 400 (plus tax of course)....brand new tranny, new front and side motor mounts, the 3/36, and a shiny 09 tsx (with 800 miles!) to play with while i wait.

tomorrow i will be calling corporate to figure out where to send a handwritten letter effusively praising all who helped me with this...not even 24 hours had elapsed and they got me 100% goodwill!

so for all you people in or around the kc area....go to superior acura! now i know where i'll be buying my first car once i graduate

is motor mounts really necessary.? only $100 for 3/36 that sounds awesome, hopefully i'll get the same deal for the tranny as you but will find out this friday night or saturday morning.

the front and passenger side motor mounts are often broken without the driver knowing it
When replaced with the trans the front mount install cost drops by 2 hours!
