Sounds like someone's plucking a rubber band under the hood.

No seriously... It seems the minute my '99 TL hit 150K miles, everything started going wrong, which is fine except now I've got an issue that I can't figure out.

When the car is good and warm after several minutes of driving I'm hearing a sound from beneath the hood when I'm sitting at a light that sounds like someone plucking a rubber band or loose guitar string. I can't seem to recreate the noise when the car is in Park in the garage, but I hear it routinely today when the car is in gear and my foot is on the brake at a light. It also may occur when the A/C blowers kick on. Can't tell if its related as those fans turn on and off quite frequently when the A/C is engaged. The belt doesn't seem to have extra play in it that might cause the sound either.

Any ideas? I've searched the forum pretty hard and not found anyone with a similar problem... at least how I'm describing it.

Have I stumped the panel?

I guess it's possible it could just be the sound of my already fragile psyche, but it's a pretty loud "BOINGGGG" sound that I only hear when in the car. Better take us both in for an eval, I guess. Thanks anyhow, everyone.

I appreciate the effort justnspace... It's a difficult sound to describe. It's more "cartoonish" than a rubber band. It's more like the sound of one of those brass, coil-springed door backstops that mount on the baseboard in your home. If you've ever tripped on one of those, that's the sound, but a little muffled because it seems to originate from the engine compartment. I don't know... Stay tuned.

Forgot to update this thread with the final diagnostic from my Master Tech: The ABS seemed to be engaging at low stopping speed and making a "boing" like noise through the pedal. Faulty ABS sensor was identified and replaced. No more noises... in my head or otherwise.
