Remove b-pillar 2nd Gen TL [56k Beware]

I did my CF Pillar Project and people wanted instructions on how to remove the B-pillars. Well, here it is

-------------------FRONT-------------------
1] I'll be working on the FRONT LEFT door

2] Roll down window and open door

3] LIGHTLY peel back the inner weather strip, you will see that it's held on by plastic tab attached to the door. What you want to do it SLIDE the plastic tab out of the weather strip and counter-clockwise to 9:00

4] After that you can PEEL the inner weather strip back more...exposing the screw....unscrew it

5] Now slip your fingers through the window weather strip .

6] Pull in a "UP and OUT" motion.

7] Pull the entire window weather strip out, exposing the 3 screws...remove them

8] All the screws are removed now (4 total). The pillar is held on by 2 tabs. Wiggle the pillar to loosen it up a bit...after that wiggle in a "UP and Toward" motion to get the pillar out
9] After you are done with what you are doing...it's time to put it back. Place the pillar back on. I found it easier to put back the weather strip by RISING the window 1-2 inch so the strip can have to track to move. Place the strip back...patiently work it back in.

10] Make sure the weather strip is position back properly.

------------Rear----------
1] I'll be working on the REAR RIGHT DOOR. Again, roll down window and open door

2] Again, Pull back on the inner weather strip exposing the screw, remove it

3] Again, slide your fingers through the window weather strip and pull in a "UP and OUT" motion.

4] Again, pull the entire window weather strip out on that side exposing the 3 screws and remove them

5] Now all 4 screws are removed and wiggle the pillar out in a "UP and Toward" motion.
6] After you are donw, raise the window up 1-2 inchs to make it easier to place the strip back.

7] Work the weather strip back in to its normal position

I need to do this. B-pillar paint is wearing out (too many cheapo car washes). Please let us know if you replaced it or repainted it.

B Pillar repaint project

This thread was great for telling me how to remove the B pillar posts.

I just repainted mine with a suggestion from a local guy who works at a paint/body shop.

Look online for a spray paint called WURTH saBESTO SATIN BLACK TRIM PAINT. This is what they use at his body shop for a lot of applications and the results turned out awesome. None of the major auto parts stores carry this, but i got it from a dealer in Tampa, FL online that specializes in wash and detail products - its only 8.99 a can and 2.95 shipping. The color isn't quite as glossy as the factory finish, but it still looks very good and came out looking very professionally done.

After removing the pillars, I used some 1500 grit sandpaper to shave off as much as the "flecked" factory paint as possible and to remove the rest of the glossy finish. Then wipe down the pillars with rubbing alcohol to clean the surface and remove finger prints.

When spraying the Wurth trim paint, spray several light coats at a distance of about 8-10 inches from the pillar. Each coat dries in about 3 hours. You will see striations in the paint in the first few coats you apply - I used 7 coats and it came out smooth and has a nice sheen to it.

Great idea, I think I'll try that. Maybe it would look glossy if you added some clearcoat afterwards? Not sure though...My driver side b-pillars are fucked from the previous owner not waxing them and probably parking in his driveway with the sun hitting that side of the car the most. Where did you order that paint from btw? I don't wanna shell out $120 for two door pillars.

Thanks for this. Mine are peeling like crazy..Makes my car look older than it is...'

My question: Will the weather stips protectors lose any effect when I take them apart? I don't it will. I don't like messing with my car like that but just to ask..It does look like they are held by screws...LEt me know.

Here's a before picture of my B Pillars on the driver's side of my car.

And one of after I removed the front left B pillar. Yes, I know the window insulation looks messed up but I figured why work on putting it all back in if I have to take it back off after I reinstall the piece.

Yeah, so I'm having difficulty with getting the weather striping back into my front left door. It's the part that goes in between the inner and outer door panels. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

So just to clarify. All the items you'll need to do this are:

- a screwdriver
- 1500 grit sandpaper
- primer
- flat trim paint
- clearcoat

Does it matter what color primer you spray on? And do we necessarily need the flat trim paint? We can just use flat black and then clearcoat right? For clearcoat, we use a gloss black finish, correct? Just making sure before I go and take on this task!

This is such an excellent post I will be looking for other posts you have done. I am looking at Acura TL's to purchase saw a beauty today but the black pillars looked horrible (it was the only thing that detracted from the car). I am so glad I found your post you made it look simple and now I know how easy it is to do. Thanks again

Alternative approach

Try using vinyl wrap instead of painting. Sanding and repainting is fine but the same thing will happen...wind, dirt, and road grit will wear down the finish.

I found some carbon fiber vinyl wrap on ebay and will give this a try.
