hey all you stereo guys, i was wondering if i need a remote wire if i'm hooking up a sub to the stock radio. i did this once before i got an aftermarket deck but now i put the stock radio back in and couldn't remember if i had a remote wire running to the amp or not. i have some device tapped in to the stock sub that connects the rca cables to the amp.

if i do need the remote wire, where does that connect to besides the amp? and i was also wondering what the remote wire actually does.

the remote wire basically "wakes" your amp up whenever the car is on. since the amp is always connected to the battery it's built to only turn on when the remote wire is sending a signal to it to signal the car is on, this way it won't drain your battery down.

you can hook up a remote from several different places. since it's a low volt/low amp signal so you don't have to worry about blowing fuses if you double it up on something.

one place to take it from is your cigarette lighter since it's only on when the car is on (the previous owner put it there on my car). i think some people have used the power leads to the power seats. i'm sure there are even better places. a search might turn them up.

your other option is to wire it from a constant source and just use a toggle switch to turn it on and off when you want to use it, although that can be annoying too.
