Picture of tranny filter element, 2000 TL

My 2000 TL has 50K miles on it, and I only recently found out the tranny filter has a paper element. After finding out also that some people get sludge in their filter, and the filter can dislodge from its glued end caps, I was in a rush to change my filter. Well, I found no sludge, and the filter element was 100% intact, but there was a quite bit of metal in there. I'm guessing this amount of metal is normal, but it is twice what was in my wife's 2003 Odyssey tranny filter at 90K miles. Hmmm, maybe I just have a lead foot. Overall, I'm just relieved I didn't find sludge in the filter.

You're supposed to use Honda ATF-Z1 fluid ONLY. Dexron III is ONLY for topping off temporarily in case you can't find the Honda fluid. Before you say the manual says you can use it, read it again! It states that if you do use Dexron III, to drain and fill the transmission with the Honda fluid ASAP.

EDIT: What filter are you talking about? This transmission has an internal filter you can't get to unless you disassemble the transmission.

Even if I were to use Dextron in a temporary situation-IMO any fluid that has "Super Tech" wouldnt be poured into anything on my car...

Honda ATF-Z1 is what is strongly recommended for our transmissions.

There is currently a discussion on the Second Generation board regarding the small external filter. Interesting stuff I wish I knew a few years ago, and complete with diagrams.
