Exclamation Mystery battery drain,,Alternator DIY???

Been having this problem for awhile but it hasnt been too big of a deal till now due to such low temps outside...So after i shut my car i hear a buzzing (motor?) sound from the rear of the car about every 2-3 minutes. it almost sounds like the fuel pump priming the system...it just keeps doing this like clockwork lasting about 10 seconds recurring every 2-3 minutes. Anyone else have this? any ideas where to start looking? i have seen no fuel leaks under my car and i cant find any wet areas on the lines...

Also, im going to replace my alternator tonite as it took a shiz on me last week, is there a DIY anywhere? ive searched all over the site and havent found one. it looks pretty straightforward i just would like a walkthrough to make sure i dont go about anything wrong.
Thanks a bunch guys and gals!!!

Before you replace the alternator/check the brushes. The brush assembly unscrews from the back of the alternator. 2 screws. If the brushes are worn/just replace them/not the alternator. The brushes wear out. If you experience the alternator working intermitantly then it's probably the brushes. I've replace them in all 3 honda products I have owned. The alternator was fine/it was the worn brushes. I took the assembly to an alternator shop and had them replaced. $5.00 buck one time. $15.00 another. The garage wanted over $400.00 to replace the alternator with a rebuilt one. Yea Right! they said they didn't replace brushes=go figure.
