Ignition coil pack question

My daughters 2000 TL, suddenly came up with miss fire codes, and the engine was obviously missing quite bad. We isolated the bad coil pack, and now I wonder if they are all likely to go bad one by one. Any one have any experience with this? Thanks; Howard

usually it will be only one at the time. had the same problem with my car awhile back and swapped out one bad coil pack and she ran fine again. Haven't had a personal experience of any others going out yet since replacing the bad one and its been at least 20k+ miles since I swapped out the bad one.

but yea, not to say it won't happen down the line eventually, at least next time you'll be prepared if it does happen and it's an easy fix.

On my old '99 TL, I had them start going out one after another. Like 4 within 10k miles. Sort of like how light bulbs go when they are all the same age. Maybe I just had a coincidence with my experience, but after the 4th one went, I just went and replaced the remaining two and kept the two old ones in the trunk with an Allen key just in case

Thanks guy's for sharing your experiences. I think I'll tell her to get two, and keep one for a spare.

usually just one, unless spark plugs recently changed and coils were mishandled and dropped or set down hard
some months later failure occurs

make sure to reset the ecu after new coil install by pulling the CLOCK fuse on passenger end of dash for a minute
May want to replace that spark plug too, use NGK $8 each ones

I just wanted to update this with some more information. Initially there were several codes stored; 1399,0303,0304,0306 After reseting the codes and a short engine run there were just 1399 and 0303. After reseting again I swapped cylinder 3 and 5 coil packs and did a short run again and got 1399 and 0305. Replaced the one coil pack, now #5, and it seems OK. The plugs look OK. It now runs like it should. The car has 167K miles.

excellent! when you get a bad coil the ecu isn't sure exactly whats wrong so it throws multi cyl misfire- when its usually just 1 coil failure
moving them around and following where the codes moved was correct procedure
alternate is remove power lead to one coil at a time- cking for rpm drop with each good coil and no change with bad one

167k is barely broken in! only due for some fluid maintenance in most cases- ps and brake fluid are always wise
our mega moderator has over 600,000 MILES on his 00TL which is a DailyDriver and a track day car that sees Road America! at 200kmiles the engine was removed to install a cl-s engine and 6 speed manual trans
engine torn down for inspection and found to have the honing marks still in cylinder walls- that's done when they are made--almost no wear at 200!
keep the oil changed every 7500 and it will go and go

duffer- to ensure no carbon loading was left on the piston and to clean the entire system, many of us use Seafoam, thru the gas add 1 can to just under half tank of gas
do that twice if never used any cleaner and have ethanol added to your gas
its tune up in a can for the TL!

don't forget the TB air plate cleaning on both sides and edges- remove tube from air filter box to access- use spray carb cleaner or deep creep

Thanks for updating !
Good job on isolating the bad coil and misfire situation.

It may be a good time to do some PM on your daughter's TL. Start with cleaning the TB intake, EGR passageways, and IAC valve. These are common problem areas with our aging TL's. Run some fuel system cleaner through the next fill-up and then consider a tune-up with NGK plugs, a new air filter and PCV valve.

Make sure that the cooling and electrical systems are working well. Check the "DIY" sticky for other things which you can easily do. Perform a tranny "drain & fill" using Honda DW1 fluid, along with a new inline atf filter. Keeping the tranny fluid clean will help prolong our weak tranny's life.

Good luck with helping your daughter have a trouble free means of transportation and saving her some big bucks on repairs. Any NSX pics ???

Seemed very strange at the time, but I've had two ignition coils fail at the same time, so I replaced all six.

did you or someone replace the spark plugs a few months before coil failure?
warning to all- coils are very sensitive, set them down gently!!! or 2 months later car runs bad!!

They were never out before they failed.

Right, very sensitive, don't let them even tip over! And still they last for over a decade inside hot vibrating cylinder head. Good thing I got aftermarket ones that could withstand being mishandled in the mail?

bolted to the engine at operating temperature is different than COLD to the electronics -inside, as far as fragility is concerned
it also seems to be corner rear cyl coil that fails more than any others, more heat and/or vibration in that spot takes its toll

technology has probably come a long way on this items construction and longevity, just like our hid headlight parts- new aftermarket beats oe hands down

tosh how many miles were on the spark plugs/coils at time of failure?
