how much can a decent amateur mechanic do?

I have an Acura CL-S and a friend of my sons who is a amateur mechanic. He needs money badly, and I would like to help.

Is there any risk in having him change plugs, wires and fuel filter? Car had
approximately 75, ooo miles, anything else I should consider?

Thanks

John

If the cave man is comfortable with a torque wrench. Go ahead.

Mini interview:
1)Do you have a torque wrench? If the answer is, Yes. Go to question 2
2)What is the torque spec for the TL? If his answer is 156in-lbs. Give him a chance.

Also there most likely isnt a need to change the fuel filter, as our cars have a lifetime filter built into the fuel sending unit inside of the fuel tank. If you really want to change it, you can go through all the trouble if you like.

As for the spark plugs, they are insanely easy. IIRC, torque is 12.6lb-ft. There are no wires to change, we have coil-packs.

Well a word of caution. Mixing friends with paid work can lead to tension and trouble.

Last thing I'd want is to come back with a missing plug or find out it got stripped 2 years later.

any "amateur mechanic" should be able to change plugs, replace air filter, and change oil. those three are more or less dummy proof (maybe not so much with the oil, but...) those are the only three things i would let someone else do to my car, simply because they're easy to do, and easy to check to make sure they were done right.

As long as you believe you could put things back correctly, then you can do most of the basic stuffs, and those basic stuffs are in the owners manual.

Even an experience mechanic can do a lousy job. Problem is their job is to measure how fast they can complete a task, not how well they can complete a task.
