HELP - Tranny broke 1 week after buying car
Make : 2002 Type-S
Mileage : 83000
* I just bought this a week ago and the tranny died (VSA light, ! light, and Flashing D5 light) in just 7 days.
* My TL was one of the affected units and had a Transmission check complete on Feb 22, 2005. The Computer (ECU) that controls the transmission was replaced then.
* Called Acura Cust. Relations and had the car towed to the Acura Dealer
My Questions
-----------------
* After the tranny is fixed under warranty, the dealer i bought the car from told me that i could trade it back in to him. Should i dump this car off?
* I was told by the Acura dealer that i will only get a rebuilt tranny. Is there a way to get a new tranny?
* Most of the posts over here say to get a post Feb 05 tranny where the issues are fixed. The Acura dealer said he has no way to control what tranny gets sent over for replacement and mentioned it probably will be a post 04 tranny with an updated PCM . How can i get a post Feb 05 tranny?
Thanks for any help you can provide..

Well from my understanding everyone gets rebuilt one. They ship you a rebuilt one but its got all new parts. As far as your dealer talking about post 04 I really have no idea. Maybe he ment to say 05?

Per my local Acura Dealer, my replacement tranny is already on its way. I've asked my local Acura Dealer to find out whether the tranny being shipped is a 04 or a 05. Lets see what comes back. Can i reject if its a 04 tranny and insist it be a 05 tranny?

You will likely get a post 1/2007 trans at this point in time!!
Expecting anyone at the dealer to know as much on specifics as members of this forum-well.......just go with what the consensus here says
There is "A" shop that takes the old units and starts with a new case with better designed oil passages. Then they install used parts that are within spec and new parts where required.
Occassionaly an assembler has a bad day and some units only last a day after install.
Its replaced again under warranty- so who cares- humans make mistakes.
Keep the car- the last owner was not smart enough to realize you can get a $4000 transmission free- and it will make the car run like new!
Im sure the dealer would be happy to buy the car back and resell it for more JUST because it has a new transmission!
And it comes with its own warranty, plus you strill have the 7/109 Acura coverage for it too!
Score 1 for the new TL owner who starts out with a fresh trans!!!
Call Acura at 1-800-382-2238 x5 and register your car as a new owner, they will look and see if you qualify for any other freebies!
Also register by VIN at www.acura.com owner link
good warranty info there too

The 2005 new ECU was probably when it got the oil spray bar install recall handled-
the new failure is a different part and is better on the new rebuilts

Thanks for all the responses guys. REALLY appreciate it!
The Dealer called me this morning and told me that the transmission was rebuilt a couple of months ago...
So, how do i prevent it from failing again?
Do not drive the Sequential Shift?
That's the only reason i bought this car
Is there a drive-in period for the tranny? (ie not drive it hard for the first XXX(???) miles)

Ok here is the thing about failing trannys. On the older models there was nothing that could be done to prevent failues it either happened or didnt. You could drive it really hard or very easy and it didnt matter. However, with the redsign there havent been failures to decide if driving hard is worse or not. So I say you can use SS just dont beat the piss out of it.
As far as break in I would say 600 miles because thats how long your supposed to break in the car when it is new.

It does happen from time to time that the human involved with assembling the transmissions at ~THE SHOP~ somewhere- has a bad day, or receives a bad batch of parts
Thats why they have their own warranty 12 month 10k miles- so you are getting another fresh one- hopefully a winner.
Drive with less than full throttle for the first 500-1000, but its ok to take it up a few times just to makes sure everything gets meshed together and is smooth thru the rpm range
DO test the SS at reasonable rpm up and down to make sure all the compute selenoids and such are working.
After that, go enjoy your new car!~Have fun in the mountains with SS

Thanks guys...
I'm still waiting to pick up my car. But, i gave back the loaner RDX and got a 2006 TL which had 12K miles. Somehow I felt that my 2002 Type-S with 83K miles drove well than the 2006 TL. My TL was much lower, felt more responsiev and overall felt good driving.
Thoughts?
