heat- hair dryer/heat gun,,,soften the glue and remove tint
goo gone will remove residue,,maybe rubbing alchohol
claybar and plastic polish should repair surface damage from gas

Replace the tail lights & don't look back.
Restricted (brake) light output isn't worth the risk.

if headlight lens/plastic polishing kit on a drill doesnt restore to like new,
then replacements are the way to go

ck junkyards / auto dismantler and recyling for good taillights

heat gun/hair dryer and some mayonaise-no kidding- rubbed on offending stuff
that gets bumper stickers off,,
might work in this case--heat and oil softens the glue,,razor blade gets under an edge- then its peel and pull

Chk. ebay for used lights. Ask for good pics to verify no cracks or tint, etc.
