Read the sticky....how bad are the tranny problems?
I have read the sticky and understand exactly what goes wrong with the trannys and how acura "fixes" them. I currently drive an Audi A4 1997, which has had tons of problems so i know about cars being in the shop. I had felt pretty comfortable with the TL being a reliable luxury sport car, but these tranny problems have scared me off a lot. I was considering a 2002 tl-s with around 60k on it. However, in light of these tranny problems i am not so sure. My question is how many people experience these issues, cause it seems like most people on the board have had them. Also, is the tranny problem bad enough that you would suggest i purchase a different car instead? The problem with that for me is that i cannot get the same price/performance value even close with another manufacturer...
Thanks.
Thanks.

i'd say this, tranny is a well known issue in the TL's for this model, and everyone and thier mother at acura knows this. Everyone that has had a problem has had theirs replaced no questions asked from what i have read. You are covered for 7yrs/100k. My TL-S tranny was replaced at like 110k, after the warranty, so, i'd say your safe to get a TL knowing it will be fixed if the tranny poops. Other than that, you should be good to go.

I've had two tranny's replaced thus far on my '01 w/nav. One at 44K and he other soon there after. Acura is still trying to figure out what to do. They had a mini fix which entailed adding some kind of oil jet to the second gear area. That did not work, so now they gave most (depending upon the VIN #) '01-'03 TL's and CL's owners a 7 year or 100k coverage. Not sure what to think even though this last tranny seems to be holding. I was thinking of selling the car as it only has 54K on it right now, but everywhere I look, the dealer isn't giving you jack s#@! for the car and everyone on the street knows about this issue. Too, I've heard the range for my car around $13-15K now WFT? I love the car and there really in no other car out there with the power and features that this car has in a reasonable price range. What would be nice is if Acura should make it a 10 year 100K mi warranty. That would give me piece of mind and I would be inclined to keep the car and keep taking it back to the dealer to get it serviced. Seems to me it would be in Honda’s self interest to do so.

Well, thinking that I'd be immune 'coz I'm extra careful with the tranny, so I minimize SS shifting, engine braking, etc and pay extra attention to the fluid level. Last week while in an oil change, the service tech observed a "minor" leak coming from the "drivertain".. I asked the service rep to say if it was specifically the tranny and hesitantly said "Yes it is"..."but they're looking after it." So I booked a service vehicle when they said it would take about half a day.
Apparently, a driveline seal was broken and was replaced under warranty and the ATF fluid was drained and replaced.
After a few days, I noticed that shifting from park to reverse has a very prominent "THUD" that was not there before. Also, when slowing down, I feel a little bit of a shudder, more like hat you would feel on a Chrysler minivan as it slows down to a stop.
Not good.
