if i took my car to shop and let them service the transmission how much would it cost and what all will they do to it change fluid? filters?

depends on where you take it...acura dealer would probably be 80+ to change the fluid. probably better to do it yourself. make sure to use ONLY the honda/acura ATF-Z1 fluid. if you take it to an independent shop be careful, they may use the dexron fluid which is not good.

Honda dealer charges 79.00. Acura should be around the same.

i had long talks with 3 different locally owned transmission shops a few months ago. they all said that if being rebuilt they'd suggest to use the dextron 3 or 4 (can't remember which one) over the manuals suggestion of the ATF-Z1 fluid. they said you, of course, wouldn't get that smooooth shift but it'll be better in the long run for a rebuilt tranny in my case. it won't burn up as quick & you'd want that quick shift or some bullshit. anyway, there was a LOT more to that. they talked about the additives & why they'd suggest Dextron over atf-z1, which they all seemed to have believable reasons. they didn't just spit one line of bs at me. they explained why they thought that (can't remember all of what they said atm tho)

i wonder how much truth there is to that? i mean dextron is the 2nd best suggested fluid for our cars, right? i swore i've read/heard that somewhere recently.

the manual says that if you put ANY dexron/non acura fluid in the trans, you should flush it all out asap IIRC.

err.. well, while i wait to get yelled at for how wrong my info probably is, one suggested that the dextron be mixed with a TAD of trans fix stuff. *shrug*

errrrr that just seems dangerous...i don't think honda/acura transmissions are like others...they (at least some of them) use sliding gears instead of planetary gears...maybe that contributes to it? i don't know if the TL trans is like that or not, but it seems like if the honda people wanted to make some extra $$ they could do that somewhere else...transmission fluid seems like a relatively low margin item compared to, say, a trim piece that costs pennies to make but they can charge $$$ for....
