2002 Acura TL EGR system cleaning

Hey guys,
I am about to clean out the EGR system and I need your help. I know there are lot of info on how to clean it etc and some excellent DIY for the 1999 model (which the manifold is a little different than the 2002). I know quite a few of you have done this so please give me some insight before I tackle this project.

1) Does the coil pack/spark plugs needs to come out to remove the upper intake manifold or can they just come out with the upper manifold?

2) I will also need to remove the throttle body?

3) Any gasket need to be replaced or all can be reused (car has about 130k miles).

I did tons of search and couldn't find any specific 2000-2003 TL diy..if you find please, I'd love to read it. Thanks.

its the same as 99 except more ports to clean on the manifold- 1 per cylinder versus only 1

the DIY on here should lead you thru it fine
TB to spacer gasket replace =YES, new IACV COVER gasket good plan to have on hand

remove TB with manifold attached as a unit- then seperate and flip TB over to access IACV

3 cans carb cleaner and a wire coat hanger are the tools for the job
A torque wrench accurate at 14 ft pounds to set the manifold bolts correctly

Thanks for the info.
Since the TB and the upper intake manifold is to be removed as single unit, why must you take the TB apart then to access the AICV under the TB? Just flip the whole thing over to access it???

because you will be moving the manifold in many odd directions during cleaning and rinsing- which the TB does not appreciate at all

remove it- simple when on the workbench- only 4 bolts - 1 is very hard to reach when on the car
flip it over- remove iacv COVER, remove iacv ROD and clean air slit on rod, clean area where rod slides into- it must rotate freely to make idle smooth

Bringing back the old thread instead of creating a new one.
My 03 has 145k, EGR never been cleaned. I had manifold off and found some oil at the bottom, should I be worried? I’ll post a picture shortly. TIA

If you are referring to the little bit of oil puddling up inside the upper intake manifold, unfortunately, that's normal on this engine and it's caused by oil mist and vapors being sucked in through the PCV system. This is what leads to the clogged passages.

The only way to minimize this issue is to install an oil catch can.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but a thanks to "Eric the Car Guy" and Kevin Suarez for their videos, as I cleaned the EGR valve and also the manifold/cover. I have been chasing a poor start, rough Idle/performance and even hot start issues for a year. My local indy replaced the CAT for no reason as nothing changed. did the work this weekend and drove it 45 miles to work. I have a brand new car! Well, it's a 2002 TL with 271K on it and a great commuter. See the pix for how the manifold looked....

Did this (PARTIAL) cleaning, have any impact, on the issues, ( " a poor start, rough Idle/performance and even hot start issues for a year. ") you listed?

The 'Heat soak" issue was "attacked" by changing three sensors after I watched a vid by Bundy's Garage.

That issue went away, as the car started and ran great for 2 months and came back, plus then had the hard start issue. My fans were not coming on, so one sensor fixed that issue. The other two (coolant and air temp) I think had an effect on the hot start issue. The engine runs much better, with more power since doing the manifold cleaning. I can blow air all the way through to the EGR, but cleaned the EGR anyway. My plugs have about 140K on them, so I will change them, along with the coils this weekend. As I have a new thermostat and coolant temperature sensor, I might as well swap them out while I am under the hood. This whole deal is peculiar, as the engine takes about 3 seconds to start then runs rough for about another minute or so. Then, just like flipping a switch, the engine runs fine. Once I get all that straight, I'll "test" the fixes by getting the engine good and hot (an hour ride), shutting her down and trying to start it after 20-30 minutes.
Like stated, I have been chasing these issues for a year. Too bad, as the car, otherwise is a great car and I will hate it when I have to shoot her.

WOW, 140K on the plugs! Changing them could certainly have an impact, on your issues. Do you think it's necessary, to change out the coil packs? IMO, I would wait, until after you install new plugs, and see how it performs, before switching out the coil packs. In my experience, the coil packs, either work, or don't work, so changing them out, may be a bit premature.
