1999 TL 3.2 Transmission
1999 TL 3.2 Transmission
i need some advice and you guys seem to b in the know. as stated before i hve a 99 TL brought it brand new found out about the transmission problems with the first replacement in 04 at 86000 miles then at 06 at 110000 miles dealer wont help, im out of warranty........... car has been sitting for almost 2 yrs now...... my questions is this should i cut the car and sell it ive read that the transmissions after 05 were holding up but where should i get it from? is there any other alternatives im not gonna lie the cars engine is awesome i love the speed and ride but its worthless without a good transmission..............the car is paid for what would u do
The 1999 TL uses a 4-speed automatic transmission while the 2000-2003 models use a 5-speed transmission. The "post February 2005" design improvements were made to the 5-speed transmission, not the 4-speed.
Did you ever call Acura's national customer care group to see what they could do? If not, might want to call them and see if they might still be able to help. Many cars have received coverage well beyond the extended warranty's current 109,000 mile coverage. All the 1999 TLs have reached the 7 year/9 month time limit on that warranty but that might not have been the case when you originally ran into the problem.
As the fix or sell question, you might want to first check the value of the car with a bad transmission. It might have a shockingly low value. You might have to call salvage yards to see what they'll give you. Then check the value of a repaired car with kbb.com and Edmunds.com. (Be aware that kbb.com can overestimate the value.)
Then compare the unrepaired value with the repaired value plus the cost of rebuilding or replacing the transmission.
As one data point, a rebuilt transmission for my 1999 TL cost about $3,200 through Acura.
Also, the original transmission on my 99 TL made it to 173,000 miles. So they can have a decent lifespan.

the customer care center is supposed to tell you only what the book in front of them says, but what Acura management can do is different
Normally:
A visit with the SERVICE MANAGER of your dealer- hopefully you bought it/had serviced at the same place, and ask for help. They talk with the acura regional rep and decide what to do. Many have been getting a replacement trans after limits or partial payment towards the replacement/rebuilt unit they install. All the rebuilts since mid 2005 are the new design case, and only avail at acura or from a junked car with a replaced trans in it- that you would have rebuilt
Now the real problem.
You have a car thats been sitting for 2 years. At the least, its going to need all new fluids and belts- probably a timing belt and more.
Age and sitting is the killer of many parts, especially rubber ones
If it had just quit on you and you went to the dealer that has done the past replacements, it would be a different story.
Sounds like this one is a parts car at best.

From what I've read
regarding the transmission problems, the 99's with the 4 speed are much less likely to fail. Many people have reported getting much more mileage compared to the 5 speeds. Your best bet would probably be getting the transmission rebuilt by a reputable independent shop such as AAMCO and then selling or trading in the car if you don't wan't to keep it. Places such as AAMCO as well as some others offer a decent warranty so a rebuild might be the way to go.

In an ormal situation where the cr has just tanked- I would go with the aamco route on a 4 speed
This statement: car has been sitting for almost 2 yrs now
made me think of the cars I have revived and the problems they had versus value
