Damn that sucks playa! How fast were you going, or did the trucks tire burst in front of you while you were driving?

I was doing 85 and i was on my way home from las vegas, There was a van in front of me that missed it but there was a car to the side of me so i couldnt move out of they way to miss it. Now the car is in the shop and i have a Kick ass Chevy aveo for my rental. No i can do all the things i never wanted to do in my TL, like pull the e-brake and drift around corners

Funny thing...something similar happened to me today. A car in front of me (in the last second) slammed on his brakes and swerved right into the tire tread...i guess thinking that would avoid hitting it. Instead he ran over it, picked it up and hit my car. Luckly i swerved away just enough from hitting it dead on..but i still clipped it. Now i have a tire mark and a few paint chips right below the driver side headlamp. It's not as bad as yours...but i'm still pissed about it. I guess imma be touching it up, wash, claybar, wash and wax the car on friday.

I've once witnessed a layer of a tire off a 18wheeler coming off (I'm guessing that thing weighs a good amount) rolling and bouncing.... it jumped the concrete divider. Since it was night people couldn't see it and they kept running into it. I heard screeching tires , windows breaking, and parts of the car breaking off. PPL were just like WTF was that. I was witnessing the whole thing from the overpass.. as I was at a redlight.

This is seriously dangerous. Anyone know if truck drivers are held responsible for this? I don't know if they know the exact time the layers of their tires come off. But causing thousands of dollars in damage and them not doing anything about it pisses me off... especially since I'm from nyc... insurance rates are high enough.

this same thing happened to me a couple days ago, but the damage wasn't nearly as bad as on yours

i was stuck between two cars on the highway and ran over about half of a truck tire...i couldn't avoid it

when i got to work, i saw that it had completely taken off my front license plate and the plastic holder, but luckily there was no other damage to my front end.

Ouch...well, at least your headlight didn't get smashed. I had a similar thing happen to me a few years ago but all thankfully there was only paint damage and the lower chrome part of the grill needed to be replaced.

That's a helluva chunk taken out by the tire! At least it left you headlight and CAI intact. I hate road debris I almost ran over a giant wooden pallet the other day, I think that would have been the end of my car if not me as well.

Obviousl answer- one that will not run on E85!!!

and a good sized chunk can weigh over 40 pounds!
Always keep a safety area to your side on 2 lane hiways like that
and pass trucks quickly - always expecting the worst!

Looking 5 to 10 cars- not car lengths- cars ahead,
for braking and dodging moves- will save your life!!
I saw an RX7 go over a mounted/rim semi tire that fell off the spare rack.
Launched the RX up and over from 70 mph and driver- no seat belt-ejected via sunroof!!!
not pretty
Stay alert everyone!

^^^^ funny that you mentioned this, I've seen too many tires laying in the middle of a HW way too often these days...noone even bothers to move them. But I am sorry to see your sweet heart damaged. I hope insurance covers the damages.

Yeah insurance is picking up the cost of the damage and they are also fixing the rear bumper as well, that was caused by someone rear ending me. So its working out better for me. All thought i get a 1000.00 check a year from my insurance company for not claiming anything for 3 years so no that starts over and im out the 1000.00 a year till 2010. i hope there is more than 3k of damage. Also i guess there was also suspension problems that they found so the picture doesnt show all. Also i have had fun in the Rental so far, I think the rear tires are going to be gone when i turn it in also the e-barke will be worn out.

I will post pics of the work completed.

Man, sorry about your car, but glad you are alright.

Similar thing here a few weeks ago. But it was a tire from some Earthmoving Machine that fell off a flatbed hauler on I-85. Car in front of me swerved and I was able to avoid it as well.

That tire was laying on it's side and I think ~3 feet tall. Must have weighed at least 500 pounds. IMHO, if someone hit that at 65 or 70, DEADLY.

Just an FYI

If you stop to pick up road debris of any kind- you now own it and must remove it entirely
or you can be cited for littering!!!
cant even be a good samaritan anymore!

If you see serious road debris- call 911 on your cell- check the gps for what exits you are between and give good description and danger factor
Example: Lane 1 and 2 (thats the 2 left lanes on freeway) completely blocked, Lane 3 cars are getting by and on the shoulder
Object is semi tire with rim, construction lumber 12x6 wood pieces, walnuts, whatever is the case-
They get a few reports and send a cruiser to clear the scene

Report suspected drunk/any form of DUI drivers
The life you save may be YOURS
Last weekend at 430am a wrong way on the freeway driver- no headlights-
head on into another drunk driver!!

I remember driving down a freeway on my way to work when I saw the car ahead of me swerve didnt think much of it till he was fully out of the way next thing i see is a shopping cart looking thing...lucky noone was on either side and barely dodged that...I think the city should be responsible for debri on the roads and more so if it causes damage or accidents

Its never fun to be next to a truck and hear the tire explode...Happened to me, nothing happened to me but Idk about people behind me since it happened while I was passing the Truck up. Thats when you gotta pull a matrix and dodge all the scraps and stuff.

Not that bad of a thread revival. There was a guy in the BM that just bumped a 6 1/2 year old thread about a grounding kit.
