Radar or radar detector?
If you're looking for a fuzz buster, look no further than the Valentine One. www.v1.com
It will never leave my windshield, that's for damn sure.

in all reality a radar detector is pretty worthless man. spend your money on other things.
usually once it goes off it's too late anyway. i know everyone pimps the valentine and one or two others, but do you speed that bad that you really need it? if so maybe you should consider driving more conservatively anyway.
most cops use laser or lidar now anyway, and if your lidar detector goes off then it's REALLY too late since the band is so small.
just don't go crazy with the speeding and you can save all that money for a set of headers or something else you want

If you don't have a detector, especially a good one that can pick up both radar and laser, then how would you know what cops use?
I have only encountered laser twice for the last year or so that I've had the V1. At least where I live, it's all Ka band.
The V1's record detection of Ka band (for me) was 2.9 miles in advance. You can't possibly tell me that it's worthless. When I went out to Colorado back in January (1400 miles each way), it saved me from a lot of close calls.
I've used several different detectors in the past, including the Passport 8500, and the V1 wins by far.

i just can't see spending the money on something like that. even on the highway speeding doesn't get you there that much quicker. if you do 10 miles over the limit, even 20, you're not overly likely to be pulled over and you'll get there within a 5-10 minute difference of doing something like 40 over the limit. believe me, i've tried plenty of times. you just can't win over traffic and unplanned obstructions.
obviously it's your guys money, but the statistics of speeding and time to get to destinations have proven it's a waste.

Radar detector argument must be taken into context. They work ONLY if you aren't first in line. With instant on laser and radar, one of the posters is correct that they're worthless but that is IF you're the lead car. However, another poster is also correct with the long range because you'll be detecting the cop hitting people far in front of you, long before you get there giving you time to slow. If the cop is targeting you, it's too late. You must detect the cop targeting others. Same with VASCAR. VASCAR is typically always on and as they cop creeps up you will detect it before the cop has an accurate reading.
So if you are all by yourself, sure, radar detectors are pointless. If you're on a highway with other cars, then it's not.

It doesn't matter what you have. If you're the very first car speeding along and there's a radar or lazer trap ahead with an instant-on (nowadays they're all instant-on speed guns), you're dead in the water.
Get either the Passport 8500 or the V1. I have both and prefer the 8500 (this has been discussed and debated aton on this forum). Both are awsome units.
As for this comment, i dont agree with it 1 bit. First that may be in the area you live in but not where i live. laser/lidar isnt widely used, most cops still use k and ka band radar. Laser isnt as great as cops would like you to think. (i know because i have 5 friends that are cops, from local to county to 1 state) we have played around many times up north trying different things to see what works and doesnt as far as making it hardest to get cought by radar/laser and in almost every test we did they were able to get us on radar on a empty/busy road far before laser. Laser at its best was around 1000 feet to 1320 no cars with license plate. Put a bra on and no license plate and it droped to around 700-1000 ft no cars. (1320 is 1/4 mile) Radar was consistantly farther than that with and with out plate (but not having a plate and having a bra on did shorten the distance considerably with radar) While none of this is scientific nor proven, this is just what me and abunch of friends found out 1 night. (oh and for the record 1 cop has a black WS6 TA and his TA was the hardest to get on radar and almost impossible to get on laser-only was taged once all night)
Radar when used smartly Will allow you to drive faster and not get tickets. Ultimately its the driver who will insure a ticket or no ticket drive. Always be looking for them and learn where they like to sit (like on on ramps, on top of bridges and in the ditches) and they will help, no matter the distance

Yep, black cars with hidaway headlights are the hardest to detect. Chrome grills and headlight reflectors are extremely effective in reflecting the radar or laser beams back to their sources = speed guns.

. ny state cops like lidar. and i mispoke earlier, they don't *all* have them yet, but they prefer it and are transferring over to it steadily. and i agree that it's not as good as they want you to think but the amount of tickets they give out to surprised motorists speaks for itself.
now don't get me wrong, i speed too. after all i'm only human...and i do drive a type-s
so it's tough to help it. and i'm not trying to flame anyone for buying a radar detector either. people should do as they like. i just try to choose the lesser of two evils and not go crazy when it comes to driving fast. after all, you can only get there so quick......just trying to be the voice of reason because i like you guys to be safe

The Bell Vector 995 is a good deal. It's about $270 @ Crutchfield. It all depends on what your budget is.
While I think a good radar detector is worth it to some extent... (and there aren't too many good ones) a cheap-o detector is absolutely worthless. You will spend more times muting the false alarms than anything else.
