Wondering if there is anything I can do to get my mpg from 16-19mpg to around 20-25mpg?

get better air intake, use high octane, and yeah don't floor the gas too much try to get your gears to shift at around 2-2.5k rpm, use good oil, change air filter often, clean gas system often? What else? anyone wanna add?

Inflate your tires 2-4 psi above the door sticker- try 36 front 34 rear and watch the mileage go up. An alignment to know its going straight down the road- not always trying to turn against itself helps.
SEAFOAM and new NGK Iridium IX spark plugs- air filter- all the basics still apply - now we drive with smoother foot
Gen2 guys should remove the engine cover and clean and lube the throttle spring assembly and the cables so it works smooth
Clean the TB plate while you are in there- do it with the seafoam engine treatment- see many threads on DIY
Cabin air filter makes a differance too- when you have to run the fan on 5, and the clean filter uses fan level 2, thats a load savings of several amps---

I've been using Castrol 20w-50. I've seen some threads where guys are using synthetic. Is that a better move for your car? And how often would you recommend to change the air filter. I haven't changed it in awhile.

castrol 20-50!!! no wonder your mileage sucks- thats WAY to thick of an oil for these motors
Synthetic is good to use if you drive in traffic or lots of hi speeds-
regular oil is fine too- they both work- change every 5000 to 7500 miles

USE ONLY 5-30 weight oil in the gen2 TL ,end of discussion!
if you live in canada you can use 0w20 in winter

Engine air filters last about a year- same as the cabin air filter, You can buy a K&N engine air filter thats washable, and reuse it forever- just clean and reoil

but get the oil issue fixed today!!!! 5w 30 is what you want- says so right on the oil cap

LOL!!! 20w-50 is useless in our motors, im running 10w-30 right now and thats kind of pushing it... but its fine with 10w30, but 5w20 is what you really need in there!!!!!!!!!!!!!

gen2 cars call for 5-30 in normal ambient temps. no higher than 30 weight though!!!

gen3 says 5-20 but the very slight mileage improvement is offset by the wear by the less cushioning effects of 20 weight.
Many parts smash together inside the engine- If its really cold, I would use 0-something, but for my gen2... it 5-30 synthetic-
brand varies with sale prices.

I went from 19-20 to 23.75 in my last tank simply by slowing from 75-80mph on the freeway to 65-70, using the cruise control while on the freeway to adjust my speed; and keeping my tires inflated at 40psi. I think my air filter and spark plugs need to be replaced, which will help a little as well.

I have a trip from Phoenix to Los Angeles coming up on Friday morning. 30mpg is my goal.

Thanks for the input 01'! I'm definitely going to go lighter on the next oil change.

You should see a decent improvement once you get that 20w50 out of there. Go with Penzoil synthetic, or Mobil 1 5w30. Be sure to let ALL the old oil drain out.

Check and inflate the tires as mentioned above, do the seafoam treatment and you will see a nice improvement.

anyone going on a trip-
see the seafoam diy and perform the gas tank and intake vac methods before the trip.
It will pay you back the $15 quickly in gas savings

As always- check your tire pressure once a month, and the lug nuts too!!! before a trip

so I should use 5w-30 for my 03 TL then? and synthetic is recommended? My is currently getting 19-20mpg and i just bought it so i have no clue what the old owner did to it. But she told me she has it taken care of at the Acura Dealer she bought it from by schedules. I should consider using Cruise but it's hard to use cruise here since freeways are usually curvy
and usually get moderate traffic.

Use the cruise in town- any time you are over 35 mph turn it on
you can quickly disconnect it with the steering wheel switch or the brake pedal = a tap to it turns off the cruise
Curvy roads? No hiway in america has that bad of curves!?! Or you live where its fun to drive~
Any amount of time its on-is saving gas compared to your foot.
Notice when you put on the cruise- and lift your foot off the pedal- it uses less throttle for the same speed-- from the weight of your foot.

2500 and 3k is a waste. A good synthetic will last far beyond 7500. Yes you see the autobahn but it will be fine. Going to a thinner oil like 5w30 or 5w20 will help your mileage.

You say change out at 2500 and 3000-- are you using the SS mode or gate shifting your automatic transmission?
If so - stop doing that!!!!! Its killing your mileage
Just put it in D5 and use 1/4 to 1/3 throttle, a light to medium accelleration and the car will shift itself right in that rpm range, but without any extra use of foot motions causing gas to enter the engine when not required
Let the computers do their job- there are many sensors for a reason'
Use cruise control anywhere you can- for 1 block if thats what it is...any use of it helps

In stop and go freeway traffic- slip it into D4,
that keeps it out of overdrive, so it doesnt hunt between 4th and 5th when you get that 30-45 mph short sections of cars moving...
The trans still works the same- just wont look for 5th gear--more gas savings

so i just hit cruise control whenever i want the speed to maintain? say i want to keep going at 45mph i just hit the "Cruise Control" and release the gas? does it still accelerate or it will keep it at that? I've never used the cruise on my car so i don't really know how it works.but yeah i guess i'm going to give it a try.

Your 21 and never used cruise???

Its designed for the HWY to maintain a set speed so that you don have to do all the work. Get going the desired speed and push the set button, and take your foot off the gas pedal when you see the Cruise Control light on the dash come on. Look at the buttons on teh wheel as well. You will see Decel and Accel, and cancel. You can accelerate in 1mph increments for each time you push it or Decel the same way. Cancel disengages it as does simply applying the brake.

I appreciate it 01'. But I don't use the SS, I just ease onto the gas and I make sure I dont accelerate past 2500-3000 rpm's. I also will start using D4 in traffic.

I just started using Cruise at speeds slower than 55. So we'll see if there are any improvements.

Prociate it!!!!!!

yeah man lol embarrass to say that but XD I did use it today while taking my mom to work and i love it lol. wasn't as hard as i imagine it would be. thanks for the tip on using it anyway. i wonder why i never mess with the cruise function in my previous cars lol. I thought it was only for like long distance traveling on interstates. Now i just need to seafoam my car and I'm set.

Forgive the newbieness, but could you or anyone explain the differences between the numbers, and maybe ideal applications.

If you dont understand- you have not read the DIY CAbin Air Filter change to see the pics, and done it!
Supposed to replace every year! Most have 5-6 7+ years on them--- you have changed the engine air filter before that ,,,a few times!!
Imagine something much smaller and every bit of air coming into the cabin heat -vent or ac, passes thru it

For the noobs and those who didnt get an owner manual with the used car purchase- here is the free link- click year then model- it opens a pdf file- move the hand over the index- click and read anything you want
Lots of cool stuff and operating tips are included

And those squirrels are spinning the fan cage, now connected by rubber band to a small drive wheel under the car- so they power it in town for me

On the freeway?- no way!- they have it in their contract!!!

Actually, replaced them within one month after buying the car used (2002 model)- easy to do, fairly dirty but not clogged. I think they had been replaced before.
