Improving Mileage BAMN

Allright guys, i want to hear ideas for improving mileage. I already get pretty exceptional economy, but I'm curious about modifications like modifying the ECM settings, turning off cylinders manually (I know they do this in some V8s), sacrificing horsepower. I'd basically like to hear anything even remotely plausible.

I know I'm going to hear the whole "why would you buy a performance luxury car if you're going to cut its balls off" crowd, but my driving is conservative and deliberate anyways, and I just want to hear ideas bounce off the walls here.

No way to modify the ecu, cant shut off cylinders, All you can do is keep your tires properly inflated, properly maintain your car, and be nice on the gas pedal

I am sorry, but buy a corolla or civic if you want incredible gas mileage and a solid ride. The TL is not an econobox.

If gas is starting to burn a whole in your pocket, you can cut it down a few bucks and use 87 instead of 93. Been runnin regular since I got the car, no problems, 330-350 miles to the tank with mixed city and highway driving. Cant feel a difference in performance.

Buy tires that have relatively poor grip.. such as Toyo 800's. Very low rolling resistance but longer braking distances.

On a base TL this is true.. on the Type S you'll lose gas mileage.

inflate tires to 38-40psi, make sure air filter is clean, plugs are in good shape. run some fuel system cleaners(gumout regane is what I recommend). Seafoam your IM and TB and you should post very solid MGP numbers. I take extremely good care of my car and I have all the bolt-ons and drive spirited and get 25-27MPG regularly.

Tire inflation is very important like others have said, but driving "smooth" is the most effective way of coaxing more mileage out of any car. By driving smooth I mean not flooring the car or coming to screeching halts - use the cars momentum to keep it moving instead of the gas pedal. Cruise control is a good example of this when you are on a clear highway.

I put in SS mode and shift around 2K RPM but below 3K RPM, till I dont reach 4th gear.. After that slowly but surely gain speed to the speed limit, and chill. For the people behind me who are looking at me mad, they meet my middle finger..

try a K&N Air filter that is supposed to increase your numbers. take anything out of your car that you dont absolutly need. IE subs, clothes, wife, kids, the dog can stay. and keep your windows up.

If you want better gas mileage use your chevrolegs. Or if you want to take your car places then you could put one of those massive wings on the back and push it like a shopping cart.

Why is it that people start threads like this, i.e., a great combination of the ever popular "How many miles per tank do you get?" and "Can we modify our ECM?", then disappear? I particularly love the "turning off cylinders manually" idea. If it was that easy, people would have been pulling off spark plug wires a long time ago.

Ever since the "GM has a 100 mpg carb but they wont sell it because the oil companies are paying them not to" nonsense, people have been looking for a magic bullet to improve fuel mileage. Here's a clue for you noobs. The magic is in your right foot.

Really? Hmm

I got 31 to 33 mpg at 70 mph with regular or premium. Possible ECU changes over the years?

From the first day I drove my first car, I have never worried/wondered about gas mileage. When I start not being able to afford gas for the car I drive, I will get a new car with better gas mileage stats. Until them, fill 'er up and lets drive

The best way to improve fuel economy is to drive more conservatively.

As for the comments about using less than premium gas... I hope you have a huge wallet. The engine in the TL is running high compression. That is why 91 or better octane is required. The higher the octane the more anti-detonate is in the fuel. The anti-detonate is to create an even, controlled burn. That way the fuel is burned in the combustion chamber more efficiently.

If you run 87 octane in your engine, the computer will retard your timing and you will lose a lot of HP. If the engine is running hot, then there is a greater chance that you will have mis-fires, or have fuel ignite before the spark plug has a chance to ignite the air-fuel mixture.

If you like driving at WOT (like most of us do ) you had better use premium fuel. As the speed of the engine increases, the engine has to advance the ignition timing so that the maximum combustion occurs at TDC. If you run 87 octane, you have a high probability that your air/fuel mixture will pre-ignite. If that happens, the explosion will occur before TDC. If this happens on a repeated basis, you run the risk of seriouly damaging your engine. You can throw a rod, and damage engine internals. Yes this is scary. You most likely will need to replace the motor.

If you need fuel economy, purchase a used econo box for under $2000. That will pay for itself in about a year or two.

The price difference between premium and regular is about $0.20. At most I've filled up 16 gallons. Do the math, 16*0.2 = a whopping $3.60 per fillup. I fill up every other day. I drive 200 miles a day and I use about 15 gallons for those two trips.

I tried 89 octane in my TL-S the first tank after I bought it. I got 260 miles in 14.5 gallons (~ 18mpg). I filled up with 92 octane and got about 20mpg from the second tank. I tried being really easy on the gas on got 24mpg from the third tank. I may go back and try 89 again to see what the mileage is like being really easy on the gas, but I know I definitely had less power with it.

More than half is city or stop&go traffic.
