without removing the bumper is just ridiculous.
i would say, if u gonna do it, do it right. take the bumper off
Hence why i said its easier for the TL-P to remove the bumper as its much larger than the S

i'm new here and this is the first thing i have ever done to my car. The pictures were helpful and thankfully everything went smooth. and now that the fuel maps have redone themselfs the throttle has quickened up and she sounds great.

when i took mine off i bought a K&N filter and some intake tubing that i routed from the air filter box to an opening on the bumper. Tubing didnt do much that i noticed, but it seemed like a cool idea

Hey guys, this is my first post but I've been searching the forums for a few months now. Anyway, I was just wondering how much HP gain this would give me. I have an 02 TL-S if that helps. I'm going to guestimate about a 5-7 HP gain?

Can it be put back? Is there really any big gains from this? I really don't want to do this and then have problems with my engine and stuff. What exactly is the intake resonator? Does that mean more dirt and stuff will be going to the filter?

I disagree. Doing this is pretty much converting your old intake into a Comptech Icebox. Just cheaper, but doesnt yield quite the same power

You really need to use the search button. You wont have ANY issues with the motor removing it. There will be some gains, You will have more by upgrading the filter. The intake resonator is just that. Its a muffler for the intake. Our motors make a loud intake noise and it quiets it down.

Thanks for the help but i already went ahead and did it, and im in freakin love with it! I kind of drive with a heavy foot and absolutely love the sound. Really easy to do and I would really recommend it to anyone who doesn't have the money to purchase a real cold air intake.

Dammit...you guys are making it hard for me to keep my TL stock, and I wanted so much to do that. The lure of a louder intake and a few HP will no doubt win out. *shakes fist

With the (easily replaced if you want) lower airbox out and a K&N air filter in, my wife doesnt notice it arund town, but reports she likes ~the neat sound it makes getting on the freeway now~
Why she normally requires vtec to get on the freeway-- is a question better left unasked,

but does explain my seemingly futile efforts to increase the gas mileage results!!

you can actually just undo the top nuts and clips and pull the bumper down, and leave the lower part attached.

I find when I use the search I get a lot of topics that have nothing to do with what i am looking for so I just ask the question here. A lot easier than looking through tons of threads and tons of posts. Thanks for the answer though!

I actually managed to do this without removing the bumper and my car on the ground. I just cranked my wheels all the way to the left for room, and just removed the few plastic clips at the front wheelwell and the leftmost underside of the bumper.

I have a 2003 TL-S. YMMV.

I did this two days ago. I noticed attached to the resonator was an elbow shaped piece of pipe that came out with it too. I am assuming that is suppose to come out.

After the removal, I disconnected the battery to allow the ECU to reset. Since taking it out, I feel like I am burning gas like no other. =(

Also, the bumper clips are a pain in the ass; what is the best way to go about popping them out?

Use a flat head screwdriver to SLOWLY pry out the top part first, then pry out the bottom part.

I only had my 03 TL Type-S for two days before I took mine off. I rode with the stock air filter on and no resonator for about a week while I waited for local auto zone to get me K&N air filter. SOunded much better with resonator gone and stock filter... but when I put the K&N filter in it sounded 100x's better... Plus I got another 2mpg with the K&N. I didn't think the k&n would make that much difference over the stock filter, but boy o boy was I wrong... I couldn't believe the difference in sound the k&n made over the stock filter..

I just did this about an hour ago and I love the sound, I took it for a spin around the block and it sounds beastly, my friend noticed a huge difference in the sound too, tomorrow will be the real test day.

Also, I didn't get any lights or computer issues from doing this, just putting that out there.

Great DIY though.

Absolutely not. The resonator was just there for sound.

Noticed several people pulled their bumpers. I was doing a brake job on my '03 TL-S so just pulled the wheel well cover and vuah lah. Resonator pulled off easily and love the new sound.
*NOTE* need to have some new pieces-of-crap plastics pins on hand to re-install the wheel well liner

thread summary
tl-p owners: recommended to take off bumper because they have a larger resonator
tl-s owners: can turn all the way to the left and remove resonator from underneath the car

This has no performance gains at all unless you want to upgrade the filter (k&n) and even with that you still wont be seeing the gains of a real intake system. Your motor is still stock so there is no reason to worry about warranty problems or emissions problems.

Its a free mod and if you want a more sporty sound coming from your engine then go for it. you could also remove your exhaust resonator if you want to just get loud.

Note that resonator was pretty heavy.
