Is your speedometer + 4-5 mph off!

Has anybody noticed there speedometer reading about 4mph faster than it should. I always felt like I was going slower than my speedometer showed. I had my wife track me and call me on her cell in another car and it showed that I was going approx. 4mph faster than I was. I then took a WAAS enabled GPS and checked and sure enough it was 4-5 mph off target. I understand that speedo's are not perfectly acurate but they are usually no more than 1-2mph + or - actual speed.

Just curious if anyone is experiencing this.

Never even thought about it, but will get out the GPS and test it out.

My roommate was reading an article (sorry I don't know which one) in which they discussed car manufacturers and how much off in % the speedometer was. I believe it said Honda/Acura was the highest at like 5%-6% error. These numbers where all acknowledged and acceptable by the manufacturers.

Now that you brought it up I really want to find that article, I'll see if I can hunt it down and post it.

Thank You, Let us know what you find out when you check yours. I'm not upset about it it would just be nice to know that it's "normal".

I should have stated that it was 4-5 mph off at 75 mph on the highway. So I was actually going 70-71. This could be a good thing, it could save me some tickets as I tend to stay in the 75-90 range when cruising on the interstates. That's kph if there are any cops reading

Not sure how H/A compares to other makers, but all makes have pretty inaccurate speedo', and that inaccuracy increases exponentially as your speed increases. Of course its kinda hard to complain that your speedo is off at a buck ten isnt it??

Sorry, I have to disagree. Mechanical speedos are notoriously inaccurate. Digital/electrical systems are not.

The TL uses a VSS (vehicle speed sensor) driven by the tranny as I recall. It is a mechanical gear that drives a digital pulse per unit of work. The speedo is driven electrically by the ECM, which takes the number of pulses per interval of time and calculates speed. This has been used for many years, and is very accurate. My 1985 Corvette Z51 indicated 150 and was verified at that speed by track radar. Used a similar system.

If the H-A speedos are chracteristically off (which I doubt), it would have to be intentional. A closed-loop system loike this is not capable of 5-6% inaccuracy. Digital/electriucalo ones are not.

Tire size is another factor as well, I know mine will be around 4 MPH off because I dropped a tire size.

My TL-S is dead on. I have the stock tires, BTW. So was my '92 Vette.

My 95 Accord EX is about 3mph fast at 60- it reads 60, I'm going 57.

I appreciate you guys checking, mine is off. I think I'll take it in and see if they can fix it under warranty. Not a huge deal but if no one elses is off something may be wacky. BTW I am using stock tires and rims. I noticed within the first few weeks of ownership and haven't done anything about it in the last 2.5 years so I can't be that bad.

Mine is too. This has been confirmed with a calibrated radar unit.

Haha, I just drove by one of those 'Your speed is' radar setups and it was the same as my speedometer. I don't know how accurate those little radar stands are, but mine was right
