You can do some research to learn just about everything relevant to HID retrofitting using the link above.
To answer your question, there is no difference between Xenon and HID (High Intensity Discharge)
Your car already has HID headlights. However, they are reflective types as opposed to the better projecting types. You can retrofit projectors into your car quite easily, as your car already has the HID setup. It is just a matter of swapping in a projector (you can just buy a premade kit).

Oh yea, they are super expensive. I think dealer charges something like $100 for a bulb.
They are expensive for two reasons:
1) They cost much more to produce
2) They are a newer technology
Still, you can get a pair for $30 on eBay. If you are just replacing your bulbs, just get any D2R bulbs from eBay. Do NOT get D2S. If you can only find D2C, then they will work too (but D2R would be ideal).

The Morimoto kit from TRS is high quality with 5 yr real warranty. They also sell the oem ballasts and bulbs (best quality) at incredible prices.

One thing is Halogen Headlights with Xenon Gas to make them Whiter/Last Longer and another different thing HIDs which indeed have Xenon Gas Too...
Halogen + Xenon =
PROS: Whiter Light + Longer Lifespan than Regular Bulbs, Super Cheap compared to HIDs.
CONS: Lumen Output remains the same as an Original Halogen Headlight.
HID =
PROS: Shit Ton more Lumen Output, Shit Ton more LifeSpan, 3 Colors to Choose (5K, 6K, 8K)
CONS: Alot more Expensive than all the Regular Bulbs in the Car.

www.hidextra.com one of our trusted sponsors
$59 kit with 2 new ballast- ignitor connector wires to bulbs and 2 new bulbs
suggest 5000k for best color to see objects in your path
cutting 4 wires is pretty easy~
all of us need at least bulbs now--based on hours used- HID get weak and lose color
and the water in headlight prob mandates waterproof replacements you can mount out of the way too
there are 12 volt xenon bulbs, not to be confused with 20,000! volt HID bulbs with xenon gas in them that we and most cars use
