I am going to change my brake fluid myself at 25K. Over time the fluid absorbs water, then braking performance and reliability starts to diminish. On older cars changing the brake fluid really makes a difference.

Someone once told me every 2 years regardless of miles. Just every 2 years. I've had my car over 2 years and have not done it yet...but will soon. I agree with Chemmech's statment. I think that's why ya do it once in a while.

I want to do this, just to be safe, but how the hell do you drain all the brake fluid out of the system?

Read the owner's manual maintenance schedule. It says for both normal and severe service, change brake fluid every 36 months.
It's a matter of time, not mileage. When getting brake service,
a fluid change is fairly simple. They just add more clean brake fluid to what they would have to top off anyway.

I did it 2 weeks ago when I changed my brake pads. What you do is after you change the brake pads, there's like a little valve thing on the clamp. You have it closed, have someone in the car push the brake pedal a couple of times, then hold it all the way down, then you release the valve, the brake fluid comes out, close the valve, THEN now you can release the brake pedal. Do each wheel a couple of times to make sure there's no air in it. After you do one wheel, you add more new brake fluid. Also you need to do it in an order on the TL. First do passenger side rear, then driver side front, then driver side rear, last one is passenger front. Do it til it's clean fluid coming out of the valve on every wheel then you're set.

I've changed the fluid on my other cars, but not the TL yet. I used to be a mechanic so I use a special tool and an air compressor. Here's the link, the kit cost me around $300.

http://www.vacula.com/usa/produkte/f_produkte.shtml

Look under Products, then brake service, then brake bleeder drain man.

The only thing more irritating than antifreeze (makes your skin itch and stink like antifreeze, yuck!) is brake fluid.

I used to be a tool maniac. Got a tool question? Just ask me.

how much does it usually cost to get a brake fluid change at a local shop? I am sure dealers charge an arm and a leg. and suggestions? I don't think I will be able to do it myself, although all of my mods have been done by me. and i mean ALL.

I did it with the key turned to "II" position, but I didn't have the car started. I believe that if you have the car started, the brake doesn't get "hard" after you keep pressing it. But if the engine's off, everytime you step on the brake to pump it, the pressure doesn't go away so it'll get harder and harder to pump and you want the pressure so the air won't get in the lines.

Brake Fluid Change

I just had the brake fluid on my 2000 SSM TL changed at 30, 723 km. It cost $40.00 CDN at Toronto Honda. They also flushed my rad for $60 and changed the oil for $28. The brake pedal feels firmer and I hope this will extend the life of the calliper piston.

I have often found that Honda dealers offer better prices than do Acura stores. Terrace Gate Acura is the exception; they offer the lowest dealer service in the GTA.
