Make sure you don't get any finger-prints on the bulbs...so use a soft towel of some sort and just keep them wrapped so they don't get dirty. Also, keep them where you won't step on them.

Before putting the HID bulbs or any bulbs for that matter, take a quilited Bounty Towel, fold it up and wipe the glass part of the bulb. This will remove any dust, dirt and even finger prints that can cause the bulb to blow. I do this all the time before putting any bulbs in, cuz you just can't be too safe. Small step but it can save you lots of money.
For HID bubls you can insert the folder bounty towel between the glass and that metal rod, that runs the entire vertical legnth of the glass, and wipe that way.

The only thing I would use to clean a bulb is rubbing alcohol. You really shouldnt need to clean them though. Just dont touch them. I just lay them on a paper towel when I do headlights. Just dont step on them while you wrestle with the housings.
