I only use Mobil 93 Octane. This is not only because it's a great gasoline, but because of the Mobil Speedpass. I don't have to take my wallet out, and I can fill up in less then 5 minutes.

I know Hess gas is cheaper than other major name brands. But I just don't know what the hell they put in their gas?! Yeah... I'm going to eat some more healthy food, so does my TL-S.

Shell.....93 Octane. Best mileage on ALL highway was 526 miles on 15.2 gallons (75-80 mph) = 34.6 mpg. Typical running back and forth to work and around town is 20-21 mpg. Someone said they were getting only 28mpg highway....something is definately wrong with THAT car....

Yeah.....ME!!!
I use Shell 93 octane too (but some peeps here say there is too much sulfites in it) so now it's Amoco "Clear"
Car is only three weeks old.
Had 21 miles on it from the dealer.
Right now it is at 1116.
Never drove it past 3500 RPM (just so that I could break it in proper)

YIKES....really sorry to hear that AndySara... Im running headers and the K&N filter....Im sure that helps my mileage some. I dont know...I just think my car gets a bit better mileage than most. As for the Sulfites....who knows, refining isnt always an exact science anyway. Im sure the levels vary for everyone depending upon the crude they use. By the way, my 34mpg was from the north side of Indy to Branson Missouri....all on 1 tank. My brother was with me, all of our luggage and 2 sets of golf clubs. Tire pressure was 36 psi. I couldnt believe I got that good of mileage and actually pushed it further than I should have just to see if I could make it to Branson on the single tank. As you can see, 15.2 gallons filled it. Ive never been close to putting that much gas in it at one time again....LOL

I was under the impression that 93 octane burns hotter & faster, that is why my mileage was not too great. Was thinking of going down to 91. I drive at 75-80mph too....so that may account for it. Double Darn.
actually the opposite. Octane is a rating of how combustable the gas is. Lower octane = more combustioable. Diesel for example is abotu 40 octane...i.ee very combustable. That is part of the reason why a diesel engine has no spark clugs. Hi compression ratio (13:1 on acverage) and low octane fuel are all that is needed for combustion. So lwoer octane gas burns easier.
As far as mileage and hp go, it depends on the car. Some car's timing maps are more agressive than others. An E46 M3 for example loses about 20 peak hp on low octane fuel. When octane is too low for the timing, pre detonation occurs, the knowck sensor seeing the timing tells the ecu to pull back timign a few degrees until there is no more knocking. So using 100 octane race fue will let your ecu advance the timing a little and make more power. It won't be a huge gain, but it will be there. Now if a chip tuner wanted to, they could optimize fuel delivery adn timing maps to be optimized for higher octane fuel. Manufacturers could make more power if they chose to, but they have to account for people runnign lower octane gas.

You only have 1100 miles on the engine, it is not completely broken in as of yet. You most likely also have the original oil in the car, which when switched to synthetic will also help the mpg.

Thanks for the info. I would love to change to Syn Oil today if I could. However, my dealer told me to leave the factory oil in for 3700 miles as it contains moly for break-in.

Andy,
He is correct, do not put full syn oil in till at least the 3750 mile mark. The reason is that engine break in is also know as engine wear in. Synthetic oils do such a good job at preventing wear that it would prevent the wear needed for the engine to break in properly. Your gas mileage is less during wear-in because the engine is still "tight".
You should not change the original oil prior to the 3750 because the metal particles that are in the oil actually help the engine to wear in. Changing the original oil to soon during wear-in prevents the engine from proper wear-in.

Opec has the largest reserves so a price change by them affects the pricing everwhere.

I'll try to make this short. I work for Shell (17 years), and put only Shell gas in my 1989 Accord before getting rid of it in '00 (company loyalty thing). A friend of mine who works at Chevron had the same car with about the same mileage (100k), and he put only Chevron in his Honda. My car had been running kind of funny (hesitating, starting). I took my car in to the same shop about the same time as my friend, and the mechanic was amazed at how much cleaner my friend's throttle body & injectors were compared to mine (he actually hung photos up in his shop!).
The mechanic suggested I switch to Chevron, because he said he'd noticed similar looking build-up on other Shell employee/gas user's fuel systems (he didn't touch my car). I switched over, and noticed the difference almost immediately. I took the car back in a couple of months later, and it looked a lot better. I think there's something to this Techron stuff Chevron puts in their gas.
Long story shorter, I only put Chevron 93 in my 2000 TLP and now in my 2002 TLS. It feels a little funny to fill 'er up at Chevron and pay for it with my Shell Mastercard wearing my Shell employee ID badge, but ....

I have heard that story about Shell for years. Here on the west coast it is very hard now to avoid Shell, since they have taken over all the Texaco stations in the last three months.
Anyone have any stories about Unocal? It is not the same as the old Union76, it is marketed now by Tesoro. Since my Texaco
is now a Shell, guess I will have to look for a Chevron.
I have been getting around 25mpg on my '03 TLS, 3700 miles
so far--gotten as high as 35 on road trip-driving between
75-85 most of the way.
