Here in Washington D.C. every car has to go to the DMV Inspection Station we only have one at the moment. The other is closed for renovation. They check everything on the car & sometime get picky. I have to go thru next month for the 1st time with the TL. I have to take my tint off before I go thru it won't pass & i have 51% tint. We go thru every 2yrs but it use to be every year untill about 5yrs ago.

Check this, but I think in Jersey it's every two years, and if you buy a new car it's inspected when it's registered (check that I may be wrong) so you have two years before you bring it into inspection, i.e. two years to have tint all over before peeling it off
