When the tranny blows what is broken?

For all the TL owners that have had to have their transmissions replaced, what part failed within the tranny? I know they just replace the whole transmission but what part failed? Am I asking this question right?

Please go to www(dot)acura-cl(dot)com and take a look in the Transmission forum stickies. The information provided there is lengthy but will answer all your questions.

This only applies to the 5-spd transmission. For the 99 TL (which is a 4-spd tranny), it is due to weak bearings.

To be a little more detailed, the 3rd gear clutch pack begins to disintegrate (note brown transmission fluid), and over time this reduces fluid passage through the transmission. As the process continues, the transmission gradually burns itself up due to increased operating temperatures to its other internal components.
