You need to be more specific with your symptoms. Is it when you first apply your brakes? How fast/what gear are you in when you are breaking that this is happening? It could be a transmission problem or something with the brakes...

i have that problem too. when you gradually slow down, say from 40 - 50 MPH (sometimes more, sometimes less) to ~10 MPH, it feels like the car stops sharply for a few milliseconds. its really hard to explain.. but i think i know what you are talking about. its really annoying, and i notice this happens in hondas. i havent experienced it in any other car.

Downshift?

You guys might be talking about when the automatic transmission downshifts as you are slowing down. The lower gear actually is working to slow down the vehicle at that point. I know that sometimes I feel this.

To check if this is it, put it in sport shift. While driving, downshift early (while your rpms are above 2k will probably do it), but don't put your foot on the gas. You should feel the engine "brake" the car. If this is what you are talking about, this will probably be an exaggerated version.

I hope this helps.

feel it when turning

When I use to make turns in my previous olds intrigue, the car would downshift, and I could step on the gas and pull while the steering wheel unwound.

In my new TL, the car seems to slow down after the turn and the steering wheel does not unwind as readily. I makes it hard to pull out of a turn fast, feeling torque.

It does seem to work if I step a little harder on the accelerator, but not if I'm cautious with the gas.

If you guys are talking about when you're completely at a stop and braking...than it jumps....then it could mean your transmission. But if you guys are talking about when you're slowing down than I don't know. Cause on my car before my tranny went out....everytime I was at a complete stop with the brake down...the car would feel like it jumps a little. Cause that's what happen to me before my tranny went out so be careful.

I get that sometimes when Im at a complete stop. I always thought that was because I barely step on the break when Im at stops. Shxt dont tell me my trannys about to go.

My car also "jumps" when at stop lights, but only in warm weather. I had the dealer look at it one time, but "they couldn't repeat the problem".

Anybody figured out why this happens?

This has been documented numerous times here on the forum. It's the compressor for your A/C kicking in. If you're sitting at a light for an extended period of time you may feel the car surge or jump momentarily (some people describe it as feeling like they've been tapped by the car behind them). When the compressor kicks on, the engine RPMs increase to compensate for the extra load and that's why the car "jumps." If you shut your climate control off completely, you'll see that the car won't do this. Once you get used to it, you won't even notice it.

so matt, you're saying that it's not the tranny problem but the compressor for the A/C that is doing it??

I can only speak for when the car is at a stop, with your foot on the brake. If the sensation is occuring as you slow down, that may be a different situation.

yea cuz my wife drove the car today and she felt the jump when she was at the red light stop, and she thought the car behind her bump into her. so if you saying the reason it jump is due to the compressor then that was the answer i was looking for..
thx

Yep. That's definitely the compressor. Kinda unsettling when you first experience it but it is quite common on this car.

Thanks for the info. I guess the warm weather -> A/C makes sense then, huh? :toothless

Actually, if you leave your climate control on "auto" you're running the A/C almost all of the time. A/C is great for removing moisture from the air, which is a common cause of fogging on windows in the winter. So the system runs the A/C compressor to remove the mositure in the cabin, and just keeps the airflow coming in over the heater core to keep the heat on. So even during the winter with the temperature set to 72 degrees, you're still going to have the compressor kick on and off. The only way to shut the compressor off completely is to turn the climate control off altogether or manually override it and turn it off.

BTW, when you run your front defroster (on any car), it kicks the compressor on and blows warm dry air up against the inside of the windshield. The compressor stays on for the duration of the defrost mode.
