What are you paying for your insurance on the TL-S?

What are you paying for your insurance on your TL-S?

I just got a really great quote in my opinion from my current car insurance provider, Prudential.

I was quoted $537 for 6 months for 100/300k Liability, 50K Property Damage, 5000 Medical, 50K Uninsured Motorist, 250 Deductible Comprehensive, 500 Deductible Collision ... in Fairfax, VA. Personally I think that is a really great quote because I was quoted almost DOUBLE from Progressive.com and their competitor quote through StateFarm.

By the way, this is for a 2003 TL Type S, and I'm 22, with 1 moving violation against me (Improper passing on the left) which is 2 years old now (June 2000), I do get a 10% discount from the company because I carry homeowner's insurance through them as well.

Does that sound pretty comparable to other people's insurance quotes?

I was quite happy when I received my quote, because I was budgeting in a $200/month insurance payment, and now it should come in at UNDER $100/month!!!

PS- Sorry if this has been posted before, I did a search but no recent posts came up regarding what people are paying for their TL-S insurance.

I just insured a new 2003 (sorry, not an S type)last week. Carrying 500k/500k bodily injury, 500k property damage, 10k medical, 500k/500k uninsured motorist, 500k/500k for underinsured motorist. 100.00 comp deductable, 250 collision deductable, 25.00 towing, and 30.00/day for rental car. Paying 792.40 annually, getting discount for homeowners as well as a multicar discount. (Numbers stated are only for the Acura).

For your age, it sounds like a decent rate.

I kept seeing the tv ads, and thought I'd call GEICO (a 15 minute call could save you 15%)...

Quoted me 6000.00 annually for the Acura and for the other car, a 1993 Mercury Sable that my daughter drives (carrying only liability on the Sable)with half of the coverage amounts.
Nationwide quoted me 3100.00 for the same coverage as GEICO.

Think I'll stick with the present company (Secura)

I'm 22 and currently paying $3,300 annually in premiums for my '02 TL-S (no points or accidents). I'm actually looking for another provider with lower premiums...Anyone in NJ have any suggestions?

$4K?!? :wow:

I feel very lucky. I have 250/500K Liability, 100K Property, 5K Medical, 40K Uninsured, no deductible on the Comp but I carry a $1,000 deductible on the Collision and my ANNUAL premium is $505.70. This is for a 2K2 TL - S and I am 31 & married (clean driving record too).

You should really look into raising your deductible. You can save some major coin going from $250/$500 to $1,000. It pays for itself.

In most companies, if you get a renter's/homeowner's policy at the same company you get your auto policy, you'll get a nice discount.

One other thing you might want to look into, if you haven't already, is gap coverage.

If you're on a loan and didn't put down a hefty down payment, at least enough to match the monthly/yearly depreciation rate, you may be in trouble if your car is deemed a total. If your car is totalled in the near future (knock on wood) and you paid $2,000 on the downpayment and a total of $7,200 in monthly payments, here's how it usually breaks down. The insurance company will usually determine the Actual Cash Value (***) of the vehicle, let's say it's $27,000. Now let's say the loan value is $38,000. The insurance company will pay you $9,200.00, the rest of the ***, $17,800.00, goes to the lien-holder. The lien-holder then subtracts $17,800.00 from the from the unpaid loan, $28,800. The lien-holder will then request payment of $11,000 from you. Therefore, you end up with a bill for $1,800.00, not to mention your deductible as well.

If you had gap coverage, the insurance company would pay the difference between the remaining loan amount and the lien-holder's portion of the ***. Therefore, they'd pay for the $11,000. In this case, you'll get back exactly what you paid for, the $9,200, less your deductible, of course.

I've seen a lot of good people with nice cars get into serious trouble without gap coverage. The worst was a 2000 M5. The owner got a deal and got away with a $3,000 down payment. He bought the car at $72,500 and made monthly payments of $1200. Around about April of 2000, his car was stolen. Total theft = total loss. *** was found to be $63,100. As he had only paid two months of the loan, he was given $5,400 out of the $63,100. The remaining $57,700 was sent to the lien-holder. The lien-holder hit the poor guy with a bill of $17,300. With a $1,000 comprehensive deductible, the owner ended up with a bill from the lien-holder for $12,900. That one seriously broke my heart.

Check with your insurance companies, the better ones carry gap coverage. Another caveat would be the state you live in, more than a handful out there don't allow gap coverage.

$2120 /Yr...not too shabby for a 26 yr old male's 1st ins policy. Plus I didn't low ball my limits, they're 250/500 liability and 100/300 uninsured motorist with $500 deductibles.

What part of the country you live in is a big factor in how much your insurance premiums are; heck, even with multi-car and homeowner policy with the same insurance company (CSAA), along with 100/300/25 w/ 500 deductible, clean record, married, 36 and licensed for 20 yrs., I still pay $814/yr on my TL-S. Actually, when you think about it--having your spouse on your policy may not be as beneficial a factor as one may think, since if both of you drive the same car or cars, the insurance company may rate at the higher risk driver (factors include record, number of years licensed).

Yo Hunter - Who's your insurance provider? I'm with State Farm right now and they are charging me $1100 / year. I have $250 deductible. I know going to $1000 is not going to get me near what your rate is.

Wow I guess my rate isn't that great considering almost everyone is paying less than me ... In the Northern Virginia area though insurance seems relatively high. Not nearly as bad as NJ (which is where I'm originally from), but it is higher than other areas.

I'm just happy that I dont have to pay the $2000/year that Progressive quoted me. I can save the extra $100/month for mods to my TL-S once I get it

I have GE (as in General Electric - what isn't GE involved in?) Auto Insurance Program. Give them a call 800.523.1700.

FYI, I only have two cars with them (second is a 2000 Honda Accord EXVL) and live in the Western burbs.

I had Allstate but they were around $300 more per year.

You should raise your deduct to $500. Are you really going to file a claim for $250 ($500 loss - current $250 deduct)? If you do, you will end up getting screwed the next time the policy renews.

Just my $0.02

In NJ:

23 yrs old, no tickets/accidents $2,200 with 500k/500k insurance. Not too bad for NJ

If you guys need a decent place for Insurance in NJ, try the company that I go through. I use Commerce Bank, and they deal with many different insurance agencies to give you different quotes on. If you guys in NJ with high rates want to try that, feel free. 888-751-9000

I am not attempting to solicite sales or anything, just passing along good advice to NJ people!

Although that's a great price you're paying for insurance, aren't you possibly leaving out some facts? Like--how old you are, how long you've been licensed, multi-policy (e.g., homeowners), what your collision/comprehensive deductibles are, how many miles/yr you drive in each car? Just having a clean record doesn't always result in a really low premium; I have a clean record also, along with multi-car/homeowner's policy, yet I'm paying $814/yr for my TL-S...I dunno how old you are but odds are that if you lived in NJ or many urban areas of California, you'd probably be paying higher premiums than what you're paying right now in PA regardless of your driving record.

A couple of things worth noting about the Mob, I mean Insurance companies.....
Insurance companies pay 51 cents on the dollar in claims. They make 49 every dollar you spend. You have better olds playing horses or the lottery or? High deductibles folks!! The only reason you need insurance is for cotostophic claims. Liability only, unless you are paying off you car.

Oh yea by the way $700 a year, Progressive.

I understand the reasoning behind going with liability only, but...what happens if an uninsured driver crashes into your car? Liability-only insurance won't cover your loss, and even if you sue the guy, odds are that since he doesn't have insurance, he probably doesn't have any money for you to get if you win a judgment against him.

Anybody know if I get a discount on my TL-S with NAVI because it has OnStar which can act as a Lo-Jack type device? I'm hoping it will reduce my insurance by a couple of bucks a year at least

True. That's why many people opt to go with Uninsured Motorist Property Damage coverage. Depending on which company you're with, UMPD coverage will cover up to a certain amount of your vehicle's damages, deductible free. The company I'm with will pay up to $3,500.

As for going liability only, I don't think that's a good idea, even if you're done paying for the car. If it's a new car, like the TLS, you're pretty much SOL if you ever get in an at-fault accident. Cars these days are "flimsy", so to speak, and cost a heck of a lot to repair. An example: 1999 Camry, dent and scratch to pass-side 1/4 panel = $2,332.87.
