What 'size' (?) oil filter?

Hey...

Am going to switch to synthetic oil at my next oil change --- within two weeks. I'm wondering if there's any particular 'size' filter that I need to buy...or if there aren't 'sizes' - if there's any specific one I need. (I'm obviously buying my own oil and filter...I think I've only seen 5-30W synthetic here...not 5-20W as listed on our oil cap).

I've never had to buy a filter before, so I don't know what to look for when purchasing the correct one.... I have a 1999 TL. I'm not sure which brands are available in Canada - so please list any info I will need to purchase either a Mobil 1 oil filter or a K&N filter -- you guys have said they are comparable.

Thanks!

....That's what I meant --- so if I'm able to find Mobil 1 oil filters here, I would need "M105"? I'm not sure if they are sold here in Canada, so I might not be able to go that route...

I did find a retailer that might carry the K&N brand though... and I believe the oil filter I would need - if going that route - would be: HP-1004...

Thanks...

Yep you're right...you have to use the HP-1004 K&N filter for the TL's...that's one I use.

Hey StreetSpirit,

If you're making the switch to synthetic ... how long are you gonna run between changes? Some ppl are going 1 yr between changes (12000km-20000km) instead of the Acura recommended 6 month/6000km. Are you going that route? Once my warranty runs out, I'll definitely go synthetic.

fsttyms1 - What's the difference between the mobil 1 M104 and the M105?? I haven't been able to find any info on their website re: which one for which brand/model car.
So you've used the OEM oil filter while also using synthetic oil and found there wasn't any difference between the OEM filter and a high performance one? ....I guess it would save me some money to stick to Stock if there's no difference... Since the oil would probably last me longer than the OEM filter - would I need to change the filter even before the oil needs changing?

Derrick - I don't think I could manage 20,000km without changing the oil. Even if that's *physically* possible because of the longer-lasting synthetic oil, I don't know if I could do that *psychologically*! ...It would just seem too bizarre to me to go a year without changing the oil....

Mobil 1 makes a 0W-20 oil now.

Also, you could use the Purolator Pure One #24458 filter. It's an oversized piece, and costs $6 here in FL.

I'd have no problems going to a 12000km change interval. I change mine about every 8000miles or so.

I believe the M-105 is an oversize filter vs. a "regular" size for the M-104. Oversize implies that it has more filtering element.

Oversize, more filter element, and more volume of oil, to keep it cooler.

Good question!

Based on the following website, I would say that the Fram X2 is the best and most readily available oil filter. This does not endorse any other Fram filter lines, as it turns out they're crap. But read this article: while not totally up to date, it's quite informative.

yea there was no noticable difference in the amount of particles between the mobil 1 and the fram i used in the first 2 changes.
as for how long to go i change mine every 8-12,000 miles (not kilometers) ive had it tested every time and the oil was still in good shape. and mine was severe driving

Any opinions on the Fram X2 extended guard filter (XG3593A)? This filter comes sealed in a vacuum canister. I've picked up a couple of these to go with my Mobil-1 synthetic oil. They cost about $10. Is this filter a waste of money?

If you are in Ontario, you can buy Amsoil direct from the distributor... (its in Mississauga) I've been using 5W20 for 2 years and change every 12,000km's (but I do that in 2 months). Car run perfect and revs very nicely. Other people who have driven it have commented on the smoothness and noise level.

Cool!..... I've noticed that almost everyone here uses Mobil 1 and not Amsoil... Any particular reasons? Is it just that Mobil 1 is more easily available? (It's a little different for me cuz I'm in Canada and some of these items aren't so easy to come by!)

TLS-RULZ -- thanks so much for the info! I had no idea it would end up being so easy to come by! ....Is that where you get your stuff? What's the price like?

yup...there's 0w-20 now, it's a bitch to find. most stores around my area don't carry it, so when you do find it, you might as well buy a few cases. mobil1 made 0w-20 especially for hondas and fords i believe, it's just their replacement for 5w-20 and also cars that use 0w-20.
