I got in a big argument about this stuff on Car Talk in Off Topic.
From most of the stuff I have read, the letters and numbers mean nothing, however, the Honda website itself mentions in an article about the history of the NSX what the name stands for.
"NS" stands for "New Sportscar," and the "X" is used like a mathamatic variable, as in "unknown," to mean "unknown world." So it's "New Sportscar for the Unknown World. I'm too lazy to go dig the article up, but look in the History section of Honda's corporate website.
Like I said, most of the stuff I've read say the letters mean nothing, but I distinctly remember reading a Car and Driver New Car Guide from 1997 (when they switched from names to letters) that the letters mean as follows:
RL = Road Luxury
TL = Touring Luxury
CL = Coupe Luxury
