Post -- to wax or not to wax --

To the great people of this magnificent forum,

I was wondering if I should wax my car. The
dealer told me the clear coat was good
enough to protect the paint but I'm not too
sure about that!

If wax is recommended, what brand is
preferred? How often should it be applied?
I used to wax my '91 Accord every 2 months
in the summer and before winter (even though
I keep it in the garage). I predominantly
used Turtle-Wax in the past, but should I go
for one of those once-a-year waxes?

Any help from you all would be great! Thanks
in advance.

well all waxes have disadvantages/advantages, the once a year wax one is good but over 2 months and the wax is still there and all but it'll still be dirty, while the normal waxes you'll be waxing your car almost once a month so, its up to you, i would recommend meguairs, the shine is just bEaUTifUl when you buff off, the clear coat is a good thing but add some protection over that with wax! and you'll be fine.

In the past, I have used Zymol, the stripper and the wax. The stripper takes EVERYTHING off and prepares the surface for the wax. The result is a liquid like shine.

Agreed.... this is the only way to go. You do the clay bar once, maybe twice a year, but wax it every week or two. There are people on the CL forum with over 10 coats of wax. Their car has an unbelievable shine, plus, all of the dead bugs and road grit come right off.....

Zaino is it! I have been using it for years. The polish has an UV protector. Multiple layers provide a finish that cannot be appreciated with out touching it!

Also, Zaino does not leave white paste on rubber and plastic! This has saved me hours of post-detailing detailing. In fact, you can use Zaino in plastic.

Good stuff, easy to use, lasts for ever (I put one coat on my mother in-law's car last year, and the car still shines in the Virginia Beach salt and heat!)

Clear coat is just paint without any pigment. Wax it soon. Zaino all the way

Dealer says no waxing? Must want to sell you a car every few years when yours look like crap!

Clear coat is just another paint, although with some UV screens built in. It is actually thinner than the color coat! Once it gets damaged, the (dull) color coat is at the mercy of all sorts of pollutants for which it was not designed to cope.

Also, remember that in the old paint days, the color coat could always be polished if a defect occurred - today all you have is the clear coat.

P21S Paste Wax, Great shine, easy to apply and buff. Another option to extend wax life is to use a detailing spray after washing, like the Pinnacle Crystal Mist, works great.

I use Zaino and am very impressed. I have had my car for about three weeks and am on my 5th coat(have bug problems here!). It looks better than when I brought it home.

Zaino, Zymol (make sure it was made in CT, or else is it basically Turtle Wax), or Meguiar's. Personally, I wash it using as little soap as I have to, then use Meguiar's #7, then follow up with #26. Talk about shine... Plus, it is cheap. Both bottle for $15. One bottle of Zymol will be over $20...

Thanks everyone for helping me.
I have faxed my Zaino Bros' order today!
Now I'm readily waiting for the stuff to come in via the mail...
