Noisy valvetrain and degraded performance should give you a hint and if in doubt adjust every 110-120K.

The big issue is that more than often the valvetrain will become silent more than noisy.. This happened in my TL-S where all exhaust valves were very tight, Tight valves are a bigger issue than loose valves as they can damage the valve seats and thus damage the heads.

Have to agree big time with this. Most of my intake valves were fine but most of my exhaust valves were too tight. One was so tight it took two people to undo... This was at 178k miles with no prior valve work. Noticed a big difference in the way the car was after that.

I just did the valves on my type-s a couple weeks ago. Im at 245k now and it cured the intermittent misfires and rough idle I've been driving with for the past 45k. Replaced the timing components last weekend and found that the front cam was off by a tooth. Now the engines much quieter and its got its torque back.
